Dan,

Where did you get that info? It isn't in the manuals that I have.

I was told by previous owner to run at max of 2800.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

I found it at

They also have my M50 on that site with the correct max rpm of 3000 and the M60 with the correct rpm of 4000.

But it does sound a bit high, I have to admit.

Dan

The max rpm is indeed 4500 rpm, but max torque is developed around
2,400 rpm, so cruising somewhere in the ranges quoted above is typical
and consistent with the curves. The torque curve is maxed out and
pretty flat between 2,200 and 2,600rpm at about 160 Nm (118 pounds-
feet), but then falls off quickly to 122 Nm by 4,500 rpm. Torque at
3,500 is the same as it is at 1,500. Fuel consumption should be about
1.25 US gallons per hour at a 2,400 cruise rpm.

The M80T and other Primas are direct injected diesels that were
originally conceived as automotive engines, and have roots in the O-
series Rover petrol engine. The Prima series were a cooperative
effort between Rover, Perkins, and the British Gov't, and were found
in the Maestro and Montego vehicles as well as other land-based
vehicles like fork-trucks, etc. Cars, trucks, etc, are able to take
much better advantage of the high-rev range and make better use of the
powerband. It still is well suited as a marine engine because of its
light-weight, quite running, and the good fuel economy...all the
result of the engine's direct injection and turbo technology.

Jeff - Can you post the engine curves if you have them?

Perkin's technical staff informed me that the RPM for a M80T is in fact 4500rpm at 78bhp.

Mike, all of the the Primas started as auto engines. All the BA, BB,
4.20 and 500 Series "Prima" engines assembled by Perkins and marketed
as Detroit Diesel (as well as Volvo) are based on the O-series British
Leyland (Austin Rover Group) gas engine. You may be thinking of a
different series, or perhaps Perkins engines in general.

I can't find an electronic copy of my M80T curves, but will post the
Volvo curves, which are identical. The Volvo version is the same
motor, but has some different marinizing items as well as a oil pump
casting that was only used on very late Perkins verions.

BTW, as Dan Gingras and I found out recently, the Volvo exhaust water
injection connector is MUCH cheaper than the Perkins, is available
online, and is made out of cast iron as opposed to zinc pot-metal
recycled from 70's era Chevy Monza side-view mirrors.
