Anyone install A/C or combo heat in their 33ish footers?  Have any suggestions on make/model/duct routing?

I find I spend a lot more time on boat when I’m comfortable.  I have a portable unit which works for now, but looking to maybe put in something permanent.  It’s not so much a problem during the day, it’s night time.

Also, anyone cut an opening port lite on their 331?  Think a big reason it’s so hot at night is there’s no way for air to get to back or cabin.

I have a factory-installed Dometic turbo self-contained 12000 BTU unit in my 31, so even a bit smaller. The unit lives under the setee on the port side (where it makes an “L” shape against the forward cabin bulkhead. The ducts go forward through that bulkhead (split with a vent into the saloon) and back behind the setee and behind the galley cabinets to the aft cabin. The cooling water comes from a through-hull under the galley sink. The pump and filter are also under the sink.

I’ve got a separate 30 amp shore power circuit for it, with a separate AC panel and the thermostat between the chart table and the head door. It's set up for shore power only. (I don’t have a genset)

I am in the process of replacing two 16000 btu in my boat, I have already done one, getting ready to do the other one.
I checked every brand out there, for the money Marine Air is the winner.
Their coil is titanium,  their compressor is shielded, they are so quite you can't tell is running. They give a remote and a main thermostat as well.
They sell directly from their factory.
Look them you will be impressed.
They have many sizes you could probably use a 14000, or 16000 the price difference is so little.

I was honing in on the marine air, noise is a high priority to me and pricing looks great.

So seems like a 14-16,000 btu sounds about right for a 33’?  I’m probably planning to condition the salon and stern cabin, want to minimize bulkhead cuts and not push it to under/unused bow cabin(toy locker).

Where do you guys put the return?  At first I was thinking about putting it in the cabin, or splitting it.  I really want to get the heat out of the cabin not just blow cold air in.

It’s my project for winter, just getting ideas now while I’m using boat.

The return on the factory installed B31 is a pair of cutouts on the sides of the setee where the self-contained unit is installed. They are covered with screens with rather pointless foam filters. The thermostat sensor is just inside the screen.  his setup does a really good job of cooling the forward and aft cabins, but not so much the saloon. (Given that the thermostat is in the saloon, this can make for some really chilly berths if the doors are closed. )

If you latch the forward cabin door open, it blocks one of the returns. Not ideal. And it took me a while to realize that if I stowedt my cockpit cushions on the cabin floor to port of the saloon table, where they otherwise fit so nicely, they blocked the other one.

For the record, I am not recommending that setup; I’m just relaying what Beneteau did with a factory install.

I've installed two HVAC units on my sailboats. The first was 9000 BTU Webasto FHC on my 30 foot S2. It is a decent. if somewhat-undersized unit. It's a bit loud. I had trouble with the v-berth getting more air than needed, but it was sure nice to nap in there under a blanket when it was 100 degrees outside! I also didn't like that the fan always ran. I'm now installing a rather pricey (for me) Ocean Breeze system (https://www.oceanbreezeac.com/) into my B411. I went with them based on others' recommendations, the fact that they were the only folks I could find offering resistive heat on their bigger units (this is 18,500 BTU), and because the fan can be set to auto or always on. HOWEVER, I'm really mentioning it to you (and other interested parties) because the blower on this unit is extraordinarily loud. The boat's on the hard, so I've yet to give the unit a full test, but just running the fan makes me think I may well not be able to live with it. It also, as near as I can tell, has only one fan speed (it has a "fan speed" button on the thermostat, but it sure seems like the two speeds are "on" and "off"). I have this under the forward section of the starboard settee, and, with the cushion off, I was reading 78 DB using a phone app. I suspect there are much better solutions for you, particularly in the smaller sizes. If I feel any different about the unit once the boat's in the water, I'll let everyone know. Marine Air would probably be a good choice, based on what I've read in various forums.

I had a similar issue when I first installed my MarineAir unit. I had to choose their “high velocity” model so that it would physically fit the space. It took me a whole year to Finally call customer service and have them walk me through the software selections, so that I now have the 6 speeds, plus constant on that the unit was designed with. Makes you really feel dumb when you see how simple it was.

I just installed/replaced two 18000
BTU Marineair they are so quite you can't tell is running.
They give you a remote thermostat as well. The Fan can run on Auto. Or Hi, Mid,Lo.
So far so good. I highly recommend them, and another plus they have titanium coil. Both of my old units coil failed.

Go to Marineair.com, all the self contained models from 6000 BTU to 18000 BTU have Taitanium Coil.
