Greeting listers

Apologies if this is an old subject but its spring and time to do the toe rails in some spots. Any suggestions??? (they are teak on a B49)

Much thanks in advance to one and all for the combined wisdom of this list.

Sean, I just did mine.  2 part teak cleaner followed by Starbrite Tropical Teak Oil Sealer.  Turned out nice.  Its going to rain for the next couple of days...I'll try and get you a picture. -Scott

How much work do you want to do?

If you want a great appearance with a long life look at a two part system such as Awlgrip.

Outstanding product however lots of work if you do it right.

A buddy of mine has a custom built Gortz with Awlgrip floor boards. All but scratch proof, looks perfect after 12 years

I did the Awlgrip Ultimate system (AwlSpar followed by AwlClear) on the teak under the dodger (handrails and cockpit doors).  Hard to do...tedious...takes weeks to accomplish.  Looks nice, but I only expect it to last a season or two...if I get 12 years out of it, I'll let you know.  The Tropical sealer is nice because it behaves sort of like an oil..it doesn't effect the non-skid properties of the teak and will eventually wear off.

My friends floor boards are a thick veneer applied over a composite floor board (carbon I think). Boat was built in 92 however redone in 98 or 99.

The Awgrip is sprayed. The floor is feather light and does not move.

Very pretty, I don't think it is teak. Butternut and ash I think

Awlgrip has several formulations of clear finishes designed for specific applications... it's not a one size fits all... great UV filters... hard as a rock when cured for great wear in high traffic areas... can be sanded lightly and buffed out for a like "new" look ( if there is wear that needs to be corrected )... it does NOT need to be sprayed...there are additives that allow it to be brushed on and flow to a sprayed look... make sure that the technical sheets for the product being used are thoroughly reviewed... not a one step one product process of applying multiple coats... best performance is to use their recommended primers for the first few coats before applying  finish coats...it is not a cheap product... minimum quantities is quarts most of the components are about $100 ea ( rounding up )  a typical kit will run about $500... mixed product will include the coating ( primer or finish ),  activator, and reducer ( 3 part system )  plus brushing additive, thinner/solvent ( gal )   great product gives exceptional results and wear resistance.   it is designed for the pros

Obviously there are lots of choices. I have had excellent success with Cetol. I hate having to do the toe rails. This requires a sanding, cleaning and at least two coats. Nice look, spots can be touched up and they have a gloss coat that be added after the first two coats.

Last summer I put ~4 coats of Ceatol Light on our cap rails. They just spent a winter sitting out and look fine. It was easy to apply but prep took a good effort. I have heard 4 years life, but who knows ...

I had used Tung Oil for years, as it’s a great look, but 5 months later, no so much….and I am in search of something better.

Has anyone used Semco on teak toe rails and the teak on the seats?

I have my teak cockpit floor grates in my garage and just put 3 coats of Semco on them…it looks great…(I sanded, then applied brightener first)

I was told that it lasts much longer than oils and you can recoat easily every 4-5 month with no sanding…but Id love to hear from someone on the list who has used it before I do the teak toe rails soon.

I use Semco on my toe rails. I am in Georgia and it lasts about a year. Very easy to use. I just use a two part cleaner then apply the Semco. I am very happy with it. I believe that if you keep up with it you would never have to clean the teak again.

If u keep up, you don't need to clean.
Just apply annually.

Varnish is the only look, the debate should be on which system, one part or two part. The argument could be on the manufacturer.

Hey guys you have a nice looking sloop, cetol is the lazy mans finish.

Do it right albeit more work.

Has anyone used Semco on teak toe rails and the teak on the seats?
I have my teak cockpit floor grates in my garage and just put 3 coats of Semco on them...it looks great...(I sanded, then applied brightener first)
I was told that it lasts much longer than oils and you can recoat easily every 4-5 month with no sanding...but Id love to hear from someone on the list who has used it before I do the teak toe rails soon.

If you want a great appearance with a long life look at a two part system such as Awlgrip.

Outstanding product however lots of work if you do it right.

A buddy of mine has a custom built Gortz with Awlgrip floor boards. All but scratch proof, looks perfect after 12 years

No offense to any endorsement but we have tried about every finish I could find over the past 30 years.  I think varnish is wonderful stuff if you are not cruising as it takes very little to ding it.  Show me a perfect varnish job and I think one of two things about the owner:  either it is a true passion or the sea chest is full of treasure and some other soul gets to keep it up.  I have yet to see a perfect finish on a cruising boat until it sits for a bit in port.   Cetol is also good and by no means a lazy man's finish if done right.  The finish I found to be the absolute most resilient and easy to apply is Honey Teak.  It is an acrylic (I think) and you can apply a coat every 20 minutes (wet on wet) for up to six to eight in one day.  The thing is that when dinged, it won't do the patato chip thing varnish does if not repaired.  It will take a cigarette (not allowed on Why Knot) without burning.  It is expensive but will last about three years.  The big drawback, and I do mean drawback is that if it needs removal, it is not an easy thing.  It took about three weeks to remove ours last time on 70 feet of toe rail.    Since we are underway a great deal, we decided to clean the teak and simply oil it.  A coat a month and the toe rail will take dings and still look fine.  The color is natural and relatively easy to re-finish.

Again, I vote for Cetol. Not too hard, not to easy, and it appears to last well. Varnish? I'll pay someone to apply it after winning the lottery. I just don't find that to be fun. Rather be sailing.

Ha ... Selling the boat removes that from the options list, eh?

Call Jonathan at AYS South in Deltaville. Linda and I hauled out the floor boards and will start coating them this weekend with polyurethane. They are looking a bit worn. We will also be redoing the counter tops and will replace the freezer lid.

The folks at Stingray Point Boat Works will be polishing and waxing the topsides as well as cleaning out the bilge so we can replace the cabin sole.

Deck and teak look peachy, but Jon won't show the boat until we get things sorted out. If you are interested, give him a call. I have attached the preliminary specs (I think I left out a few things).

All this boat needs to become global is SSB and perhaps a water maker if you are profligate users of that most lovely fluid. It is plumbed for an inlet and there is lots of room for adding a watermaker.

I have CC'd Jon on this email, so expect a followup. We sent our maintenance documents to Jonathan to verify that all is good for another 7,000 hours before overhaul becomes an issue with the Yanmar. About the same with the NextGen.

Howell,
I don't want to belabor the point but you didn't mention Semco.
I have varnish rails and you are right about the up keep and the dings. We all know  Cetol.
Semco was used on the teak seats when we bought the boat. I have used it ever since and been happy with finish, how it wears and how easy it is to reapply or to remove.

Has anyone found a source for replacing the galley sink?  The sink on our 40 CC year 2000 (French built) has developed some mysterious holes in the bottom and we need to replace it (since it doesn’t hold water too well J).  I called Beneteau and they can order one for close to $800.  It is a double sink with the left one a little smaller than the right one.

The dimensions are 13.5” front to back; 6.5” deep; and 9 5/8 W for left sink and 13 5/16 W for the right sink.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We have a B352.  Holding tank is located in the compartment behind the aft cabin.  It’s a cute little 13 or 15 gallon unit.  I would like to replace it with a larger tank, maybe around 30 or 35 gallon.

Has anybody done this before on the 351/352 series boat?

Thanks,

Replaced on a 381 3 cabin, managed to get a 25+ gallon Ronco in there with top mounted dip tubes. Very tight.  I actually made a mock up out of plywood before ordering to ensure it would fit.

You might look at Lowes, Home Depot or other similar outlets. Ask about bar sinks. We looked at several options when finishing our basement several years ago. I don't remember exact dimentions.  I'd bet if they have an option it will be much less than form a marine outlet.

Is your sink fitted above or below the counter top?

Below, and yes the OEM sink is very costly.  I spent the day searching for anything close to the right size – Scandvik, Eljer, etc.  Thanks for all of the great suggestions.  No luck, however.  When I searched sites for household/bar sinks, they are all much deeper than ours, and depth is a big factor without losing what little storage space we now have under the sink.  Not to mention the cost of tearing out the shelf and reconfiguring the cabinetry.  We plan to resort to a temporary patch solution for now, to give us time to research further.  Patching from beneath will not be an eyesore and will contain the water until we can find a reasonable replacement (or win the lottery).

Our counter top is Corian, so if we don’t get the exact size, we will have the expense of reconfiguring the countertop as well.

Thanks again for all the tips.

They patch leaking fuel tanks with epoxy. Could you use clear epoxy to fill the voids. Worth a try.

If you could find out the maker of the sink you might have some luck at a lower price.

I took some photos yesterday of what Starbrite Tropical Teak Oil Sealer looks like after a couple of weeks on my toe rail and cockpit inlay.  I've never used it before, but "the internet" has claims of people getting multiple years from it.  It is supposed to just fade away and can then be reapplied/topcoated.  Time will tell.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cwjb1j64tfsow3b/Po-BK0Oia1

If anyone is interested in being cheap, I followed the "recipe" in this forum post on Cruisers Forum to make a 2 part teak cleaner.   Then I taped the fiberglass with blue tape, put on 2 coats of the Starbrite with foam brushes.  Try not to get it on the black caulk and wipe off the excess with a rag if you do.  If you get it on the fiberglass, it will clean off with a quick wipe of brush cleaner. Easy enough.

I don't but I have to assume they exist. Many boats were lost in Katrina and in Sandy plus boats get damaged all the time (sinking, collisions etc) and I have to assume that before they get crushed and turned into fiberglass chips that people remove anything of salvage value

But this is an Assumption

Starbrite tropical teak Sealer works...  clean the teak as for using oil, apply like oil... do not apply thick coats wait a few days  before recoating...it is at its' best when allowed to be absorbed into the wood,,, applying a thick  coat makes it sit on top of the wood... it looks close to an oiled finish in a week or two... it cleans up using teak cleaner or wears off... it is a decent finish for the lazy and lasts much longer than oil... I would recommend it for a try... all the finishes offer something a little different in the way the product looks, wears, and is maintained...

"...get multiple years ..."   maybe if they keep their boat inside in the dark...

in the south Starbrite Tropical Sealer... it will keep for maybe 6 months before it starts to wear and needs recoating for a fresh look, where oil will last a few weeks... needs to be recoated before it degrades to maintain fresh look...  it is not a high effort product, recoating happens in minutes...  the product behaves much like oil,  yet it is a cross between oil and a finish... it is a compromise in appearance and effort, it will not yield a perfect oiled look, but will be good enough
