I thought I’d share what I wrote up yesterday.

The short version is that my hour meter hadn’t worked when I bought the boat at the end of 2020, I bought an LCD part for $30, now have a functional counter, and it reports 12,984 hours.

I’m interested in knowing what similar aged engines report?

Some math to perhaps help..

12,984 hours at 6 knots is approximately 77,904 miles, or about 3 and a half times around the earth.
Has your boat circumnavigated the globe with its sails down, three times, in 15 years?

I would say your counters way off probably hooked straight to 12 volts. Not to the alternator to read when the engine is running. It's reading all the time.

I had done that same math, as well as trying the number of hours per day over that period, getting an average of over 2 hours per day. I know that the original owner used the boat as a charter boat in Seward Alaska, and I'm in Seattle Washington, and straight line between the two locations is only 1,200 miles.  Just looking at the wiring behind the tachometer, it wasn't as clean as I'd prefer or think would have come from the factory. I wasn't back at the boat yesterday, but I'll be checking on the count to see if it's advanced while everything is just sitting at the dock. If it's advancing when the instruments have power, that would account for a lot of spurious hours, and I'll know when I next go to the boat.

The yanmars have a decimal point on the hour meter, are you sure that isn't 1298.4 hours?

The replacement panel doesn't have a decimal point, but that number of digits would make much more sense. 1298 * 6kts = 7,788kt or 1298 / 16 = 81 hours a year.

I went an alternate route when mine needed repair - failed a few years before I bought the boat. see https://mtech.dk/thomsen/Husky/repairs/vdo.php shows method, bit of a winter project but hours elapsed kept and correct to sellers estimate to within 7 hours!

Also loads boat name on screen at boot up.

Happy with result. Actually have now got a brand new zero hours tacho as am about to upgrade panel to Yanmar C so hoping to get back part of the ridiculous cost!
