My fuel gauge is reading full after several hours of running.  I think it's stuck.  Any likely causes to troubleshoot?

Thanks,
Angus

Hello,

On my Oceanis 40 (200 liters tank) the dial always shows 100% until the 1st 100 liters are gone. When I see the dial at 90% I will top up. That is good to a void bacteria growing. Normally I fill up 100 to 120 liters. I tried to look at the problem but I gave up

Check the two spade connectors on the diesel tank sender. I think for VDO guages high ohms = full, so if you have any corossion it could cause a full reading.

I go on engine hours only, with estimated fuel consumption.

I do the same thing, The KISS principle works well in this instance.

Good summary of the troubleshooting procedure. On my 42cc (French made boat) the resistance scale on the sender is 10 ohms empty to 180 full. I believe the American senders start at 240 ohms empty and go to 30 full. I don’t know if SC made boats use the European senders. In my case the sender was okay, I replaced the gauge and all was well. Good luck on finding the problem.

I believe Beneteau uses a VDO fuel gauge/sending unit. They're designed to read full (or higher than is really in the tank) if there is an open in the circuit. start at the back of the gauge and inspect every connection to ensure it is corrosion free and tight.

When I took delivery on my new-to-me Bene the gauge read full but I ran out of fuel several hours into my trip home.  That is how I learned about VDO Gauges.
