Looking for help for some frinds currently in Mexico. They had to cut
their radar cable and are looking for any info on splicing it. Any
info from someone who has done this please let me know.

Thanks

I sometimes works.  Best bet is to get some solder splices and a bunch of shrink tubing and just try reconnecting everything very carefully.  I have an older model Raymarine which I tried to reconnect with a terminal board, and that did not work.  I was moderately successful when I used solder sleeves (West Marine sells them, BTW), and did a fair job of splicing it all back together.  I had the feeling that I lost some sensitivity with the latter configuration, so I eventually bit the bullet and bought a whole new cable.

I have had the experience of installing 2 Raymarine radars on our last 2 boats, both without cutting the cable because Raymarine does not recommend cutting and splicing the cable, specified in their installation manuals. However, i do see plenty of boats here in New England that have the radome on the mast and that mast usually comes out of the boat for each storage season, so there must be a way to do it correctly.

I would recommend that you try a search on the Furuno web site for them and if that fails to resolve the question I would suggest friends talk direct with Furuno's technical help to see what the best way to solve their problem would be.

If all else fails, I have been told (but cannot confirm) that soldering each wire in electronics such as this changes the resistance of each wire and could pose a problem and is not recommended. The alternative I have been told to do is to use a terminal strip with the correct type of crimp on connectors.

Hopefully someone here on the list can shed a more definitive and educated answer for the right thing to do than I have offered you with my ramblings.

ANYONE CARE TO JUMP IN AND HELP THESE FOLKS OUT WITH AN INTELlIGENT ANSWER??

Lynn,

You can contact Furuno from their web site.  I believe the e-mail address is fur...@custhelp.com.

They will immediately notify you that they received your e-mail and then respond a day or two later.

In normal installations, the wires exit the mast and go through the cabin top (with watertight fittings) and are connected at a raymaine junction box.  It is 6 terminals.  Power & ground are connected via a crimp.  There should be enough slack to cut and crimp a few times.  When de-masting, the terminals are disconnected.

On Island Time, I have a terminal block for Anchor, Streaming and Deck light.  I have another for the wind instrument.  VHF uses a coupler fitting.

Lynn:

The cable on our radar is spliced to allow it the pass through the deck, connect to a terminal strip and the in boat portion of the cable is then connected to the terminal strip.

For all leads other than the video, it is simple color matching. The video feed is shielded coax with an video wire consisting of 4-6 strands of wire about the diameter of human hair. The shield is matched to the shield in the terminal strip. The video feed wires are not strong enough to go directly into the terminal strip. They require a crip on / solder on connector small enough to go into the terminals trip.

We have had great difficulty finding connectors that are small enough.

This aspect of the cable is the most prone to system failure.

I have had repeated conversations with Furuno w/o success. Their world is put it up and leave it up. We unstep our mast each fall.

BTW, each other wire within the cable we "tinned" to give it strength go to and from the terminal strip.

Once you have a stable connection of the video feed, the radar unit works fine w/ no loss of signal strength.

If you desire further information, please contact me off list.

I recently replaced all the standing rigging on our B Idylle 11.5 and
the riggers recommended dropping the mast which required cutting the
radar cable. All the advice I received indicated that the only way to
reconnect the cable was to solder each wire which I have now had done.
If I were doing this again I would put a gymbylled mount on the
backstay despite the slighty height advantage provided by a mast
mount.

Hello All!

I have been sucessful with installing "Harding" connectors on my radar
cable. I used a 10 pin Harding connector for my unit with plastic strain
connectors to seal the cables Although they are not cheap and are bulky,
they are weather resistant and are used in industry. They are a German
connector that have seals and snap together. I have used them for years in
control panel building and are an automotive spec for removable
multiconductor cables. You do need to get the pins and also a crimping tool.
If you can find a control panel building shop that would lend you the tools
that you will save a bundle. Once you gone that route you will never regret
it if you regularly need to remove your radar unit. You can see my radar
mast on my web site. Look under Superior 07 pictures and I'm sure there will
be a shot there someplace. www.svoldhand.com

Best of luck, Ron O.
