Lost my ONLY key to companionway hatch. Lock has "299" engraved on it
which I assumed was the key number. Contacted Ward Richardson for
replacement key and he said I need to buy new lock. Has anyone had a
similiar situation and found a replacement key?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
I think you can get a new blank at a Beneteau dealer or locksmith or thru
Ward
but without a key to cut the blank to, I'm afraid Ward may be right, you
will need a new lock.
If you have your spare key on board the lock should be fairly easy to pick
or remove to gain access.
Or
Try a key from some other Beneteau 351, 352 or 361 in your marina.
If it works you can use it to cut an new key from a blank.
Good Luck.

I have this from previous list posts.

Beneteau Key

I have heard that a "Hillman Y5" blank works for the B hatch keys.

Yes, they do. They are identical in every dimension. I found them in a
hardware store in Annapolis. They are the proper blank and are much cheaper
(if you can find them) than buying them from either the dealer or Beneteau.

You should drill out the cylinder and replace it with a more common
key. It is probably VERY soft metal and should be a quick job. Take
the cam in back to a local locksmith and see if he can get you a
cabinet lock. Medico and a few other people make them off the shelf.
The fellow in the slip next to me had a similar problem and took
forever trying to find a key.

we wanted to get backup keys cut and had to buy the blanks from Beneteau ....

If you can buy blanks and take the hatchboards and lock to a good locksmith, they may be able to make it fit for you ....

Depends on your lock and key-  my boat has a mobella lock with a 3 digit number on the key and I was able to order the key directly from Mobella by giving them the number.  If it is mobella, contact them at

Glen,

Is the 3 digit number also on the lock itself? What year is your boat? Mine is a 1994.

Thanks, Steve

Steve,

Was Ward saying they don't carry that style of blank key or that he doesn't
have a way of knowing how the new key needs to be cut?

Randy,

Ward did not mention the key blank, I just asked about a replacement key since the lock has "299" on it. I thought 299 might be the key number and hoped he could send me a new one. No such luck and he offered to sell me a new lock. Thought I would check with Beneteau group for ideas. Am heading down to the boat next week and will remove the lock and take to a locksmith. Of course it will probably cost more for the locksmith than to buy new!

Don't count on it

I bought a new lock last year and it is expensive.

It is still in the bag, a lock smith fixed mine of $5.00

Steve,

The blank keys that are a match are not common. If you’re planning on having a locksmith cut a new key that will fit your old lock might be a good idea to get a blank from Ward.

Some time ago someone mentioned a blank replacement that would work. I searched my saved emails and didn’t find it though. It would have been from the old Sailnet list so you couldn’t search the Google history.

Key blanks from Ward cost me $4.40 each. I probably paid $11.00 or something in shipping as I seem to remember that my total cost was around $20.

I made a few extra keys for my 98 OC381 at the local ACE hardware store
using a key blank from ILCO, number 'AP5'.

Thanks for getting back to me Glen. I checked marine locks on mobella's website but could not find my lock. I am going to e-mail Ward and see who manufactured the lock.

The blanks that Ward supplied to me have "CAS" stamped on them and "Made in Italy", if that's any use to you. The original says the same.

I just e-mailed Ward to find out who made the lock.

I had the same problem when I bought my B381 in 2001.   I went to several lock smiths in the Nashua ,NH are and no one had a matching blank.  It's Italian, maybe a trip to Italy would solve the problem.  I only need an extra key.

Maybe this didn't post before ....

I found a key blank at the local ACE Hardware for my 1998 381. At first
look, it doesn't look like a match due to an extra groove, but the
groove has no effect on the fit ... the blank is made by ILCO and the
designator is AP5.

Good luck,
