Group,

I discovered that the shaft collar is leaking, not too much, but it’s something I want to repair. I don’t know the reasons of the leak,,, the boat is 6-7 years old,,,, It has an Autoprop and yes some vibration over 2300-2500RPMs

The seal is Volvo Penta (not too sure if # 828416). My boat,,,,, 473,,,,, Yanmar 75 HP.

I ordered from B the following parts:

  1. CUTLASS BEARING 30X40X100+L R
  2. SEAL PROP SHAFT VOLVO D30 #828

.

Is there any additional part that I should replace? Or inspect during the hull out??

Your comments will be appreciated.

had you been using the recommended Volvo blue grease in the shaft seal on a regular basis??
if not, that may explain why you have developed this leak.

make sure to take a close look at the prop shaft tube on both ends to be sure there is not a problem with its bonding that may be your leak. the engine and shaft alignment will need to be adjusted after replacing these parts as well.

It's the dripless seal.  It requires periodic lube.  It is easy to replace IF you can get the coupler off of the shaft.  BUT maybe all it needs is lube as per instructions.

I always used the blue Volvo grease that was supplied with the boat when we bought it in 2001. my routine was to inject a small amount into the lip seal area at each oil change, every 100 hours, for us about 3 times a season. once a season was the manufacturers recommendation as I recall.

I would think that any grease would be better than none at all. others on the list have found a source for the Volvo grease but a name escapes me.

I was given a tube of the volvo grease when I bought my boat in 2006.  And from time to time I would see it in one of my bags in  my dock box, but really never knew what it was for!

Last week when I was on the boat, I noticed some water in the well immediately around the shaft at the stuffing box.  It tasted salty.  Now reading this list today, I think I know what's going on.  I have never greased the shaft since I've had the boat!  No one mentioned it to me when they delivered the boat, however now I do see it in the manual.

Thank God for this list!

Rick,

I bought the grease from Mack Boring. A PDF file of the maintenance flyer is available on our web site under dripless seal.

inject is an interesting word here. I haven't yet done this little
operation, so it appears that it ain't quite as simple as putting the
grease all around the edges eh?

is a special applicator required to force the grease in? and once in i
am guessing that the rotation of the shaft finishes the job?

george it is easy.  you will find a red plastic " tool"  that is on your water intake valve just about 4 inches away from the shaft seal which is for pushing the greese in.   i didnt know this was required also, and had gone several years without it.  when i greased the shaft seal my leaks went away

No tool required...

pinch the seal till you get a small pucker
insert the tip of the grease tube
squeez a bit
rotate shaft
repeat a few times.

However, I use a grease gun with a needle fitting on the end and just insert under the seal.

George:
I use a soda straw. Load up some of the grease into the straw then crimp the end and slide it under the seal, then squeeze the grease out. That permits injection some distance into the seal. You may get a small amount of water but from my experience it is very little.

several of the ideas already sent in will work, but I bought a small
syringe, normally used for epoxy and filled it with the blue Volvo
grease. the tip is small enough that it will easily pass between the
shaft and the rubber seal without damaging the rubber seal. I
inserted the tip in about 1/4 - 3/16" and gave the seal a small
amount by squeezing the syringe about 1/8" every time I changed the
oil. the syringe keeps the grease clean and handy to work with.
