I've got one dumb question and a few other maybe not so dumb ones
related to the fresh water tank deck filler cap on my 1992 Beneteau
First 310.

1) Is the cap threaded in the "normal" way (clockwise=tighten /
counter-clockwise=untighten)?

The key that I had to mine was made of plastic and I've managed to
break the handle trying in vain to get it open. My winch handle fits
loosely in the water filler cap star so I tried to get it open with
that but only managed to round off my winch handle a bit and mess up
the filler cap a little too.

The diesel cap is a smaller star, I guess to help realize if you're
trying to put fuel in your water or vice-versa (?), and I had no luck
finding a key of the correct size at my local West Marine.

2) Are these keys at all standardized?
3) Where might I get a replacement key?
4) How about the caps, are they standard sizes/threads?

Thanks,

-Matt

Mat -- yes the normal clockwise to tighten and counter-clockwise to undo.
You can order new ones made out of metal (aluminum) that are much better
than the plastic ones. Just order direct from Beneteau.

Mine is already aluminum... does anyone have any suggestion on how to get
the darn thing loose without tearing it apart?

Spray a little w-d 40 on the top area around where the threads are... then
use your new metal star handles that fit tight ....try tapping on the handle
lightly with a hammer or block of wood to open.

Matt,

The water and waste caps fit standard winch handles. And they are righthand
threads (righty tighty). I recently had West Marine special order new caps
for me - See webpage http://www.goiot.com/inc/?c=2&p=16 (p/n: 93628).

Good-luck, Michael

Matt,

On the older First Series, many of the parts are made by Goiot at French boat part company.  They are being distributed by Plastimo in Florida. Manu boat chandleries are a Plastimo dealer and these deck fills are in the catalog.

If the siezing is caused by that rock hard white aluminum powder
corrosion, I have found Vinegar (plain white vinegar) the only thing
that will dissolve it. for faster action, heat the vinegar.

Just pour the vinegar on the top so some soaks into the threads, wait
and repeat, then tap with wood block and try to loosen again.

In my experience wd-40 (the miracle fluid) won't touch the powder
corrosion.

A bit of vaseline on the thread for the caps will help prevent them
from seizing again.

A while back, I bought a replacement wrench from Beneteau. It's metal and has both the star sizes for the water and fuel fill caps. I'd have to dig up the part number if you need it. Only drawback is that it doesn't float!
