toilet won't draw water

Went to flush the jabsco hand pumped toilet on 373 today and it would
not draw water in. Seacock is open.

I filled it with water from the sink, and was able to flush water out
(at least I think so).

Besides possibly a clogged intake, any other ideas on this. Also, how
can check for obstructions with boat in the water. I am afraid to use
a regular snake with metal screw spring end as it might puncture the
plastic hosing.

Thanks, Scott

Sometimes an "electrical" snake works that will not hurt the hose. Also you
could use compressed air or exhaust from a small shop vac.

depending on the age of the pump assembly the manual pumps can lose
prime as they deteriorate, yes, I know they're self priming, but trust
me, I have been through this and it's true - if the unit is more than
3 or 4 years old you can probably save yourself by getting the new
"twist and lock" replacement pump- I just put one on my manual head
and have been very happy

Might be the top valve gasket. Item 20 in the diagram on the link.

If you go to the link Randy sent, you can check out the twist and lock
while you're there - it's an exact replacement for the old pump
assembly -

I stopped using seawater in my jabsco a couple of years ago. I read on this
list the benefits of just using fresh water from the sink and keeping
seawater out of the holding tank. Works fine and no extra stink in holding
tank and easier on the plumbing.

I do the same - just pull the shower head hose out, fill the bowl and flush. Keeps the salt water and the microbes etc out of there and allow the right type of aerobic activity to occur.

Use the snake. We use one on our galley sink, the standard Kmart version, and it's not a problem. Sounds like you sucked someting up into the works, though, and it's gonna be tough to clean it out without taking apart the head.

We have been pulling seawater through our aft head for 9 years and never had a problem other than changing Joker Valves on an every other year basis. The output on that head goes over the side (actually, out the bottom) so holding tank woes aren't part of the picture.

If the head is being used infrequently the seawater stink is awsome, so using fresh water for the flush is a great idea. That is the way we have our forward head plumbed. It is electric.
