Hey all, I seen a cheap ST70 online but wondering whats involved in
upgrading from my old ST60 tridata to one of those nice colored one..
Part of my reason is to see graphically depth which my current
Raymarine RL70 Pathfinder (think thats what it is anyways) doesn't do
much more than charts and radar.

Its always hard to figure out what Raymarines goes together and it
looks like I'll have to replace a pod and I'm not even sure where my
existing is and that brings the price up past my budget.. Anyone
upgraded or installed a ST70 in a old (99) system?

thanks!
Gaute

The ST70 is a SeaTalk NG (aka NMEA2000) only device. So you will need
those pods, depth and wind, to do the analog conversion and generate
the NMEA2000 data. Alternatively you can get "smart sensors" that
directly provide NMEA2000 data.

I have a spare depth / temperature sensor ( Airmar DT800) "smart
sensor" that I got for $257, that might be less than the Depth Pod.
There are lot of exciting NMEA2000 wind instruments available too
(some are ultrasonic).

I have added an ST70 display to my Seatalk-only Raymarine (circa 1998)
system. Basically, it is just repeating the information that is
already there, but with better customizable screens. Inside the ST70,
there is a place to make the seatalk connections and it displays any
information on the seatalk network, although it may not be as fully
customizable as if it were on a NMEA 2000 network. You can download
the installation manual from Raymarine, and you'll see how it can be
done.

thats what I was hoping but it says that it require pod for depth and
though I have a depth for my ST60 tridisplay its not NMEA. I must
admit I never looked under the hood there so it might be that the
chartplotter can accept the wires from the depthfinder to it and then
send to the ST70? I've been thinking about calling raymarine but last
time I did that about something unrelated they wanted all serial codes
and I have no idea how to get that from all my instruments.

I'll check out the manual again, this should be possible then?

With ST60 instruments, you plug the transducer into the corresponding dedicated instrument, which is also on the SEATALK network and that is how the information is shared. You can not plug the transducer into your chartplotter.

With ST70 instruments, you plug the transducer "pod" (wind, depth, speed) into the SEATALK NG network and the data can then be displayed anywhere on the SEATALK NG network. If you have both SEATALK and SEATALK NG, there must be one and only one place where those two networks are interconnected. That is of course if you want to share the information on both networks, which you normally would.

Very recently I've bought a new set of ST60+ instruments (the "value pack" of wind, depth and speed) and was tempted to go for ST70s. In the end I decided to stick with ST60+ for two reasons: the cost (big difference) and because I did not want the hassle of having to deal with interconnecting SEATALK and SEATALK NG. Probably not a big hassle, but I've had enough dealing with problems with Raymarine stuff.

Regards,
Dan

I added the ST60 Graphic Dispaly at the chart table and have ton's of info
including repeat of all st data (wind, speed, depth, temp, etc) AND voltage,
gps data, etc. It has graph displays so you can track any item over time.

not to expensive either (got on ebay for 300)

Gaute - I spoke to a Raymarine rep at an event my dealer held today.
As others mentioned, the ST70 does have a "classic" SeaTalk interface
(which I did not see in the specs for some reason). Since your ST60
Tridata is still working you can use it instead of the pods to handle
the sensor interfacing. You will then just install a SeaTalk cable
between the Tridata and the ST70 to get the nice color and extra
functionality.

Head up - there are differences in the mounting posts or studs from one
model to the next. We changed out an older Raymarine autopilot and head
with new color head and the mounting stud were in a different location,
needed to drill out for them...this was not difficult just a PITA.

This shows my ignorance about my own systems but I thought the
sensors, depth and water speed no wind, in my case were connected
right to the charplotter. Is there a pod somewhere between all thes
units? I haven't seen one but also havent been looking. I was thinking
they were all connected to my Pathfinder, then from there I could hook
it up to the ST70 with the seatalk avaliable from the plotter. I guess
a simple peek up back there would tell me if the signals from depth
and water goes to the tri data or not...

Also I seem to have lost my source for it and its back up at $700 wich
is a bit too much. this great information though, if my depth finder
went out for whatever reason I'd know how this all goes together.
thanks!

I'm hoping to replace the ST60 tridata as its not needed with the much
more flexible st70. I'm going racing this weekend and I'll take a look
under the hood there, if more than one wire goes into my tridata I
think I'm toast :o(

Each ST60 (also st 40-50, etc) has it's own transducer... in the case of the
tridata, it has the depth and speed/temp... wind transducer connects to wind
instrument.

THEN, the data is broadcast on SeaTalk and the chartplotter, multi-function,
repeaters, et al display the data as it comes from each separate instrument.

ST70 uses a transducer pod to connect the multiple transducers to the
SeaTalk NG bus.

However, according to a Raymarine rep, the ST70 does have a (old,
classic) SeaTalk input. So Gaute can continue to let the TriData put
depth, etc on the SeaTalk bus and display on the ST70. The TriData
will do the job of the pods.

defender.com has the ST70 for $459.
blueheronmarine.com has it for 453.

Didn't say it didn't. But one cannot replace the tridata and wind... they
must be installed somewhere OR install the pod.

I looked at it, but went with a ST60 Graphis display that does all teh data
and tehn some including voltage, histograms, etc., $300 on ebay

The Raymarine rep said that the pods are an interim solution. They
will start using Smart Sensors that directly output on the NMEA2000
bus. With working ST60 Wind and Tridata there is no need for pods, and
you have the additional displays.

I have a ST60 Graphics Display mounted at the nav station and was
planning to build another display of my own design for the cockpit
(mainly for the crew (me) to see SOG), but with the recent price drop
of the ST70 I may just buy one.

chepeast solution for speed is old st40; sog any st50-60 or tridata. Mount
on mast or head of companionway hatch. SOG is not as useful for trimming as
speed thru water.

My paddlewheel lasts only 8 days between cleanings. I will not
re-install it again and am waiting for an update of the Airmar
Ultrasonic speed sensor or the release of the their Electromagnetic
version. So for now, GPS SOG is all I have.

Guy - I'll be in New Smyrna Beach at the end of March and will give you a wave.

My paddle wheel stays clean for months ... I take it out when not sailing.

I spray mine with the same stuff I spray on my propeller and it stays fairly clean.
