I have a 2 cabin model with 2-4D house batteries and 1 group 27 start
battery. One D is at the rear of port cabin behind the water heater.
The other D and the 27 are in front of the engine.

I'm looking at adding more battery capacity and would like to tap your
experience. How are batteries arranged on your boat?

Remember if you use AGM (LifeLine) batteries they can be installed on their
sides...under bunk mattresses, etc.

I don't know about the 473 but on our 381 3 cabin I managed to get 4 lifeline 6v batteries under the starboard aft berth with 1.5" clearance atop.

We have three 4D batteries, two under the companion way steps and the third aft behind the water heater. The Group 27 is next to the two 4Ds under the steps. We got almost 7 years out of our flooded cell batteries. We now have Lifelines and love 'em. Maybe because ours is an older model with FRP rather than wood steps, we have room for this arrangement. Hartge's YY in Galesville, MD, managed to make the Lifelines fit. Our total capacity is 760 AH. The Deka AGMs are <200 AH while Lifelines are ~220 AH.

Next for us is another charging method, like solar panels. We have been living at anchor or moorings for the last several months and can see the benefit of an alternative to the genset. It's a great unit, 5.5 KW NextGen, but it sucks about a quart an hour of fuel and I am always changing the oil.

how about wind... most days, I can keep toys and refrig on one.  Of course, there are days sailing downwind or anchored in still air when I gotta crank up the main engine... I keep a small honda 2000i on board during extended trips and have never had to crank it up for starting.

southwest windpwer; http://www.windenergy.com/products/air_x_marine.htm... had for 10 years; powder coat was flaking appx 6 years ago and they sent new (tho they said NO, it's only recoated, the  SN didn't match)... I don't have meter on it, but subjectively, it puts out a bunch of amps... can see the voltmeter surging after a few minutes of stronger winds...

I have 2 4ds and a 24 for backup starter battery.  And the aforementioned honda 2000i sits in lazarette if needed.  I did run air once, but it was pretty noisy and sometimes didn't start.  There is a kit to delay fan and pump for a few seconds till compressor surge is over.

I remember a while back that one of the 42cc owners in the group ( Denny I believe) had to replace the solenoid shut off valve on his propane system. It looks like I might have the same problem. I’m getting no gas to the stove, the tank has gas, the valve has power ( but gets very hot very fast) but no gas flow. I haven’t tried to bypass the solenoid or tear apart the fittings.

Any help from the group would be greatly appreciated. Boat is French built and I’m worried about matching the fittings and hoses to a US Solenoid valve and splicing into the current wiring. Denny what did you end up doing with your replacement,  or anyone else—Joe?

Thanks,

Get the replacement from Beneteau. You can't disconnect bits and pieces but rather you have to replace the complete rig ... Or at least I couldn't take pieces apart.

I had hoped that I could just replace the solinoid but that was not possible.

I replaced the solenoid.  No problem.

However, the problem wasn't the solenoid, it was a loose wire in the electrical panel. Now I have 2 solenoids that work!

I had to replace the valve on my French-built 36CC. I bought it from West Marine and there was no issue installing it.

You should be able to get a identical match at West Marine. I bought a solinoid at WM but only used the shaft in my existing solinoid which worked for over a year but now  I will have to replace the entire piece  now because I have a leak I can't find and I'm pretty sure WM has the identical match.  Origanal problem was no gas and very hot solinoid but it seems the shaft would stick and not open when the magnet was activated.  I don't think the solinoid on my 2002 361 is French.

Thanks for feedback on batteries. It looked to me like mine has lost
one of the 4d in front of the engine over the years and that's where
I'll add.

Jim,
I bought new fittings and replaced the solenoid with a camper solenoid. I did have to change some of the fittings because it went from Metric to sae. I haven't had any problems with the new solenoid.

I would have bypassed the valve al together, but going out to the locker to turn the valve off and on at each use was really a pita.  I couldn't just keep it on, i did not rest well when I remembered i had left it onone night when it was raining.
I would mention that the solenoid and new fittings were 65.00 versus the 119.00 from west marine. also when it breaks again somewhere, there are far more RV stores than west marines. Especially on the Fl panhandle or Tenn Tom waterway
by the way, I love this group.

I had to replace the solenoid on my 473. The simptoms you describe are exactly what I had. Gas in the bottle, power to the switch and solenoid got hot. Replaced  with on from WM and it worked great.

Denny,

Did you splice into the existing wiring or run new wiring back to the panel??

Thanks to everyone that responded to my SOS on the solenoid, as Denny said “ I love this group”

I used the existing wiring harness from the panel I did check all of the possible angles on this, just to make sure it was the solenoid.
