Can anyone with an Oceanis 400 or a 411 comment on the three bladed max prop.

In particular what size blades are they using?

What boat speed to they get motoring with the maxprop

Thanks

Fletch

I've got one on my 473.....
I believe it's 19 inches, and I can easily reach whole speed.
The big plus is that it will stop the boat so much faster than the standard fixed prop when placed into reverse and throttled.

I'm wondering about the new four and five blade Max props ...if they are really a plus over the three blade.

It was the first upgrade when we purchased our new (to us) First 405 in 2014. The boat had a 17 inch 2 blade folder, with fuel consumption just over 2gph at a leisurely 6kts (Yanmar 4JH4AE). With the 2 blade the engine rpm maxed out around 3300rpm (way over the 2900 recommended by Yanmar). The new MaxProp is a 3 bladed 18 inch "Easy" model that allows for difference pitches in fwd and reverse (IIRC, 24 inch pitch fwd, 20 inch reverse to give more bite). With the new prop fuel consumption is down around 1.1 gpm at 6kts and the full throttle rpm is at mfg recommended limit. Very satisfied with the result.

Got the prop through PYI Inc (http://pyiinc.com/). They were very helpful with sizing the prop and setting the blade pitches. They configured the prop at their shop before shipping to me.

Fletch:  My 411 has a 3 blade 18" Max Prop and Westerbeke 42B engine.  Works great in our southern California waters.  I can not recall offhand what degree the pitch was set for.  There is a chart that will give you some idea of the proper pitch.  PYI was very helpful in making my decision.

We had ours for 10,000 miles on Zydeco. It paid for itself and then some. It also delivered excellent handling in tight places. Be sure to maintain it at every haul out by cleaning and greasing. Remove both Allen screws on each blade and thoroughly grease with the appropriate compound using the supplied zerk screwed into the central orifice and spin the blade as you pump grease. Do this at least once every year. Compared to identical boats at identical speeds, we saved 25% on fuel, at least! And we made excellent speed when needed.

The PIY guys are excellent pros. Our Autoprop was recovered from abuse in most excellent and rapidly when we were in Key West. That is how I know about proper maintenance!

I swithed from a 2 blade max prop to a three blade 17" x 17 pitch Kiwi prop 2 years ago on my First 405 and love it. Speed and power in both forward and reverse are great. Major advantages I saw were cost, weight (=cutless bearing life), adjustable pitch, no electrolysis problems, no proprietary zincs, and blades that will actually hold paint for a full season.

I was a little nervous about the "engineered polymer" blades, but research (Practical sailor, cruisers forums) proved otherwise and I agree.
You may want to take a look. Good luck!
