I am replacing a couple of clutches and need to access them by removing a section of headliner.  Before I do any damage - can anyone give me clear instructions on how to remove a section to access the clutch screws.

You must start from the first one. In your picture the first one has a couple of white plastic screw cap visible, remove the caps by popping them off. Then unscrew the screws it should slide off then you will see the screws that is holding the next one. Just repeat this process till you see your clutch screws.

If your headliner is anything like mine (B36 cc circa 2001), ypu pry the wooden strips out, and then remo ve the retaining screws, and just jiggle the headliner out              b ymoving it from side to side.
