I am down to my last companionway key for my 1994 Oceanis 351.  I went to three places here in La Paz and nobody had a blank. Seems to be unique.

Has anyone a source or should I try Beneteau?

Allen,
There was a discussion on a Facebook forum on this topic.  Though it is unwieldy, I am pasting that dialogue below and perhaps there is a nugget of something useful for you there--

  • I had no key and gave it to the locksmith, he was waiting to go the wholesale and he got one and only cost me £10 including cutting it to match
  • Helps to know where you are, Paul's locksmith in Barrie Ontario has them.

  • You can find them on line. What make is the key? Usually stamped on it.
  • I have been to 2 locksmiths and they can’t find a blank either. I will check out the guy in Barrie too.
  • If there’s a number printed on the key, search eBay ! I bought 5 blanks for very little on eBay.
  • Our local locksmith (Surelock Homes in Bartie) marched mine with a gas cap key and it works great

  • My locksmith found one. Was the best in the twin cities. He stared at the key for a minutes, and then said ‘French elevator’?? I said ‘way closer guess than I expected’. He dug through his blanks and found it.

  • My locksmith had to order the blanks in but no problem apart from a days delay.
  • Any locksmith should be able to copy that key
It might look a little different but it’s not a rare key at all
  • Local locksmith made me a couple of spares no problem
  • Go to a professional locksmith.
  • I got the blank key from my boat supply store then took them to an Ace Hardware to get them cut.

  • Went right to ace hardware. Made 4 keys
  • Go to ACE
  • These keys are “special” so they are more expensive and you need to find the right locksmith. I had 4 or 5 made so I wouldn’t have to deal with it again! LOL!

Does the face of your key include a manufacturer?  I recently found blank Ilco keys on eBay. Googled the name of the key manufacturer and matched the blank by eyeballing the image on line.

I have two key blank numbers that I have used.  One is the engine the other is the companionway lock.  ILCO A05 Hilman y5.,  or a Y11 or Hilman AP5.  Sorry I don't remember which is the engine.  Looking at the new blank it looks different and has a different grooving on one side but it fits and works. I can verify this weekend.

Thanks to everyone.  I see this is a common problem.

As mentioned, I am in Mexico, and ordering small items by mail can be involve surprises. I went uptown and just kept trying key cutters until I came on an old guy who studied the key, found a  common blank he thought might work, and cut me a key.   It worked.

The shape of the blade is the same but one groove on one side of the blade is wider.  Apparently this does not keep the key from entering the lock.  The bow is oval, not square like the original.

It seems that the groove being wider did not matter and so I had several cut.  Problem solved.
