Does anyone have an autohelm and if so what brand do you recommend? I
am planning a 48 hour sail Sept 2-3 and think an autohelm might come
in handy? I have garmin chartplotter and tacktick wind depth
instruments.

Corroboree has a tiller helm ST1000+ ( not produced anymore), ST2000
(produced one) will fit I guess.

ST1000+
Pro: easy to use, can communicate via NMEA0183 with chartplotter or
windmeter
Con: on heavy sea is is weak, unavailable as brand new
So ST2000+ will be the same without the cons I think, but before
buying confirm it with vendor.

Most of the 281,s in the states are wheel steering, so tiller auto helm probably not an option, without jury rigging something off of the emergency tiller..

I have thought about adding a wheel autopilot, but it seems like there are a lot of parts to install. The wheel autopilot seems much more complex than the tiller pilot, unfortunately.

All the best,

Sven

Brian, that is on my list for next year.
I haven't done any research yet myself, so please keep us posted on what you
decide.

I use a Raymarine ST1000 (for tiller), I've not experienced a lack of
power under tougher conditions. It is still available for purchase and
Raymarine offers a graphic explaining when to use the ST1000 or other
models: http://www.raymarine.com/default.aspx?site=1&SECTion=2&Page=87&Parent=5

Thanks everybody so far,

I will keep you posted on what I find. I have a wheel so whenever I
do get something rigged up it sounds like it will be useful info to
the group. As I may have mentioned before I single hand most of the
time so it will be nice to have an autohelm to drive me directly into
the wind while I run around raising or lowering sails. Right now it
often looks like a circus act. Anyway.....I will keep you guys posted.
