Hi all,

The plea hearing for Michael Wild, the driver accused of assaulting a cyclist last May, has been once again postponed. The new date is below 02/18 at 8:30 a.m. in Deschutes County Circuit Court.

Additionally, Bend Police reported a driver/cyclist collision yesterday where Powers meets Business 97. Police report below:

Note: The Bend Police typically don't release names of cyclists unless they die. I've already asked Sheila Miller and that was the response I got. An update with the name will go out if the cyclist succums.

Date: Jan. 15, 2026
Case #: 2026-00002388
Incident: Bicyclist critically injured in crash at Powers Road and South Business 97
Date / Time of Incident: Jan. 14, 2026 / 5:26 p.m.
Location: Powers Road and South Business 97, Bend

At approximately 5:26 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, Bend Police responded to a report of an injury crash near the intersection of Powers Road and Business 97 in SE Bend. Callers reported a vehicle had struck a cyclist.

When officers arrived, they found the cyclist, a 34-year-old Bend resident, with life-threatening injuries. Officers and bystanders performed life-saving care to the victim at the scene before Bend Fire medics transported the cyclist to St. Charles Bend. The driver, 31-year-old Bend resident Samantha Schoene, remained at the scene of the crash and cooperated with officers.

An investigation determined that Schoene was driving a white Subaru Forester southbound on South Business 97 when she ran a red light at Powers Road and struck the cyclist, who was in the crosswalk. Schoene was cited for careless driving that causes an accident.

Members of the Bend Police crash reconstruction team responded to the scene to investigate the incident and the southbound lanes of Business 97 were closed for approximately two hours.
Bend Police were assisted at the scene by Bend Fire and ODOT.

Dreadful.   To run a red light 🚥—crazy!  😳when I’m walking I’m terrified in bend!   The traffic circles are a death waiting to happen!  No one wants to stop 🛑 !  It’s a small town & so many people are in a hurry!   It takes minutes to get anywhere in bend!   I hope that cyclist recovers AND I hope they get full compensation for their property AND injuries!

Awful, thanks for sharing Peter.

From Central OR Daily News:

According to Oregon court records, Schoene has a history of speeding tickets and moving violations. Schoene was cited in 2016 on Interstate 5 near Rogue River for Carless Driving Contributing to an Accident. She was cited in June 2025 for driving while using a mobile device at NE Greenwood Avenue and NE 3rd Street in Bend.

I’ve lived all over the country, from Washington, D.C. where I worked  as a bike messenger for 5 years, to rural Wyoming, and most recently Southern Oregon. Of everywhere I’ve ever lived and ridden a bicycle I consider Bend the most hostile and dangerous place to be on a bike. I’ve lived here almost two years and I am shocked by how bad it is, and this news doesn’t surprise me at all. The same day this poor guy gets hit I was buzzed and harassed twice in the span of 15 minutes on Alfalfa Market. I lived 6 years in Medford and experienced maybe 6 separate incidents like that. I stopped counting how many times I’ve been harassed on a bike here, and I’m only talking about the intentional incidents. The distracted driving, speeding, and all around aggressive driving I witness around here is just alarming.

I’m sure if you only mountain bike or live on the west side of town and only ride Skyliners you have a better time, but the rest of town is a legit death trap. I’m on the east side and I stay outside of town as much as possible, but I still get a lot of anxiety going out for a ride out here.

I don’t know what it will take to change things, I think there are a constellation of issues that are beyond what any of us have control over. But incidents like the assault this post was originally about, and the poor soul who just got leveled by a lady running a red light are symptoms of a bigger problem that highlight how dangerous cycling in Bend has become.

Stay frosty out there, everyone.

Michael

The law enforcement in Bend is only concerned about the driver of the car. I found out the hard way.

This pretty much encapsulates America.

SUV runs light, runs over healthcare professional who now needs a gofundme to pay for medical bills.

It’s really depressing.

I am truly sorry, roadies. Unless I am going to ride in a fairly remote rural area, these reasons are why my road bike is on my trainer and the majority of my rides are gravel or mountain. Cell phone distraction alone has amped up the dangerous nature of riding on the road. Thankfully, we live in an area where there is a wealth of gravel and mountain bike riding opportunities.

Living in Bend in the 90's was still like this to a point with guantelts of traffic and time of day to make the effort, versus dealing with the pressure of Bend for 70% of the rest of the day.
It may have been safer before roundabouts, but I dont have any data to back that up.
As a cyclist, you could crush the traffic-backed-up at stop signs when 4-way stops ruled Bend. Now it's a constant pump and go, repeat OH Shit....Bike repeat, get distracted repeat as a driver, or as a bike paranoid cycling. (Should be a team name)
Bend is not a wonderful place, but it was never designed with bikes from the start, and although change is happening, creating a few more corridors, etc, the pace of traffic seems to be outpacing progress.

Yes, living on the westside is the best bet, and dang it, 1996, 140K for a westside home, and it was just out of reach for me

Maybe someone starts a business or hosts a ride giving tours on the best commuting routes, and group ride it out, meet for a beer after
Video....send to the city

Side note: Commute Options lists 948 people in 2024 taking the Friendly driver course, so it seems like this number should be 9400?

Stay as safe as possible
Mike

I wonder expensive dryer vent cleaning was in 1996?

Ai says LOL

For a standard residential dryer vent (single run, accessible):

  • $40–$75 per cleaning

  • Most common range: $50–$60

For longer runs or partial disassembly:

  • $75–$120

HAHA to the dryer cleaning joke!

In all seriousness, I've often thought of what the community could do to elevate some of these concerns from cyclists. I am buzzed, nearly hit, or completely invisible to drivers on nearly every ride I go on where I need to cross town. I wear a high vis helmet, have lights on my bike, and ride defensively to try and anticipate drivers not paying attention. It's pretty frustrating and alarming. I've lived in Portland, spent time in San Diego, and traveled across the country to race my bike - I've never felt more unsafe than when riding on the streets of Bend.

Okay, that's kind of funny.

Thanks for sending the GoFundMe link, wishing the best for Dr. Speed and his family!

I haven't honestly ridden on the road in Bend for a few years, but this sentiment is consistent from everyone I speak with. In "the good old days" riding either out east toward Alfalfa or even on the Tuesday Night Loop it always felt safe, with the exception of the occasional F150 blowing by. My in-laws live on Marsh Road, right off of Cline Falls and the White Rock Loop in Tumalo and the traffic on Cline Falls is 10x what it was even a few years ago.

I do ride a lot on the road in Portland these days and it's odd to feel safer here than in Bend!

The Bend Bikes folks do a pretty good job of advocacy and could always use more help: https://bendbikes.org/

They're pretty consciously not a 'cyclist' group, but more 'people who get around on bikes', which they want everyone to be able to do.

Don't ask me how I know this, but the guy that hit me had the minimum liability insurance required.  I had >$250K uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage thru my car insurance. I had TBI, musculoskeletal injuries and bike damage.  Best decision I ever made to max out my coverage.
Ride safe,
Rob

To max out your
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage as a cyclist hit by a car, you need to proactively increase your auto policy limits before an accident, meticulously document everything at the scene, immediately report the incident to your insurer, and consult a specialized personal injury lawyer to navigate complex claims and maximize compensation for injuries and lost wages. Focus on getting the highest possible UIM coverage for bodily injury and property damage, as state minimums are often insufficient.
Before an Accident (Prevention & Preparation)
  • Increase Your Limits: Contact your auto insurance agent and increase your UM/UIM bodily injury and property damage limits to the maximum amount your insurer offers (e.g., $100k, $250k).
  • Get a Bike Policy: Consider a separate insurance policy for your bicycle to cover theft and damage, but your auto UM/UIM is key for being hit by a car.
  • Find a Lawyer: Identify and save contact info for a personal injury lawyer specializing in bicycle accidents before you need one.

What it will take?

How about a judge decide that that lady that blew through a red light and hit a cyclist should no longer be allowed to have a cellphone?  That would be such a punishment + a preventative measure to avoid a repeat.

Judge could take away her driving license too.
