Tisha B’Av – Saturday night, July 25 - Sunday, July 26, 2015
This year Tisha B’Av is observed on Motzei Shabbat. A number of points
should be noted concerning the specific observances this year:
1. The usual restrictions concerning the “Seudah Hamafsekes”, the last
meal on Tisha B’Av before the fast, do not apply this year. One may
continue to eat until sunset (8:19 p.m.). After that time eating is
prohibited, although we continue Shabbat observances until 9:07 p.m.
2. Immmediately following Shabbat one should recite the phrase:
“Boruch Hamavdil Bein Chodesh L’Chol”. Havdalah is not recited on
Saturday evening except for the Bracha of “Borei M’orei Ha’aish”. On
Sunday evening, after the fast, one should not eat before reciting
Havdalah; spices and candle are not used.
3. Those who will be in the synagogue as Shabbat closes, should bring
their non-leather apparel to the synagogue on Friday, before Shabbat, to
avoid preparing on Shabbat for the fast day. Those arriving at the synagogue
after Shabbat should avoid performing any preparations for
Tisha B’Av before Shabbat closes at 9:07p.m. Maariv and Eicha will
begin at 9:30 p.m. Havdalah is not recited on Saturday evening except
for the Bracha of “Borei M’orei Ha’aish”. On Sunday evening, after the
fast, one should not eat before reciting Havdalah; and candles are not
used.
Tisha B'Av 2015 – Saturday night, July 25/Sunday, July 26
1. The prohibitions of Tisha B'Av include: eating, drinking, washing in
hot or cold water (except upon awakening in the morning or if one's hand
becomes soiled); applying ointment, lotions or cosmetics; wearing shoes
made wholly or partially of leather; marital relations.
2. In case of illness the Rabbi should be consulted concerning the
above prohibitions.
3. Learning Torah is forbidden during Tisha B'Av as it gladdens the
soul. Specific portions, however that are appropriate to the mood of
Tisha B'Av may be studied (e.g. the Book of Job, Lamentations, the laws
of Avelut and of Tisha B'Av).
4. As we are all mourners on Tisha B'Av, we do not greet each other
even with greetings which are otherwise automatic (e.g. Hello; Good
Morning; Good Afternoon).
5. We signify our mourning in the following ways: one should deprive
oneself of some comfort upon going to sleep (e.g. use fewer pillows,
etc.); until midday (1:02 p.m.) of Tisha B'Av one should not sit on a chair
or stool twelve inches or higher.
6. Preferably, one should refrain from any kind of work or business
dealings during the entire day of Tisha B'Av. If that is impossible, one
should at least avoid such work until midday (1:02 p.m.).
7. In general, any pleasurable activity which would divert one's mind
from mourning should be avoided during Tisha B'Av.
