Easy to use and excellent results. Silverfast has a callibration system and different profiles for different film types, but after extensive testing using ektachrome fujichrome and kodachrome slides as well as different types of negative films including B&W, I finally went back to Nikon Scan 3.1.

Just happened to browse through this forum (am Olympus E-1 user)
and saw your question.
I had an LS 5000 and now a 8000 and silverfast and of course
Nikonscan. I find Nikon scan excellent.

If I want a B&W from a color slide I do the conversion in Photoshop
usually using channels.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for this. I remember Nikon Scan back in OS 9 when I used to use it with a LS-2000. I thought it was pretty straightforward, but it has since gotten a bad rap compared to Vuescan. One thing I recall is that Nikon Scan would let you see all of your pics on a color negative strip, whereas Vuescan and Silverfast only let you view one at a time. Silverfast has a pretty steep learning curve as well (so does Vuescan).

The Lumix S9 is Panasonic's newest full-frame mirrorless camera. It allows users to create their own custom looks for out-of-camera colors and is the first full-frame Lumix camera aimed squarely at social media content creators.

The Sony a9 III is the world's first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature a global electronic shutter with simultaneous readout. After extensive testing of this 120 fps sports camera, to see what you gain (and, perhaps, lose).

The Fujifilm X100VI is the sixth iteration of Fujifilm's classically-styled large sensor compact. A 40MP X-Trans sensor, in-body stabilization and 6.2K video are the major updates, but do they make the camera better?

@ Pureum. Yes it sure will! This article is applicable for most scanners. Variations will be based on tray holder size and layout, manual focus, multi-exposure and ICE, which is entirely dependant on scanner hardware.

@Johan, thanks for the nice guide. I just bought the 5400 for little money and now I wonder if I need a specific Silverfast software? Is SE 8.8 sufficient or do I need something more fancy? Se Plus? AI Studio? Cheers, Jaroslaw

@Michael. Thanks for the anecdote! I too can confirm that Silverfast is very RAM heavy. When I edit and scan on my 16GB Macbook Pro it dies. When doing the same on my Desktop with 64GB RAM it flies! Again, thanks for pointing that out. I should have mentioned that in my article.

Hi there, I am having some problems with my 5400. On all of my scanned pictures stray light / flares appear on the left and right side. First I thought my Mju is broken but it also appears with my G1 and old slides.
I normally account for that with some gradients in LR but this is getting very annoying lately. Here is how it look before and after adjusting it:
nc.helbaco.de/s/52KoWb6EzdN4eTkAnybody experienced with that?
Johan, please delete this post if you feel like I am misusing your comment section.

@Jaroslaw you have a light leak possibly due to someone opening your scanner before and removing adhesive. Get a guide online how to open the scanner (free) get some gaffer tape and patch up the light leak.@Laine the 5400 II has no downsides. Get it and a cheap old Windows PC or Mac and run the original Minolta software.

@Johan Thanks for your reply. Any idea where to look for the light leak? I opened the scanner and patched up some tape around the plate that covers the lens. No avail. Any ideas are highly appreciated!

silverfast are unclear about which version of 8 actually works with 5400 mark one. does the software use its own driver to see your minolta? you cannot use dimage software on windows 10 32 bit and silverfast stopped 32 bit support so a bit fogged. anyone care to tell me their current setup? or i go mac?

I could use an answer too. I just installed VueScan and Silverfast on macOS. VueScan worked out of the box (except my DiMAGE 5400 seems proper effed). Although SilverFast detected the scanner, it told me to install a driver (without providing one). Where the hell am I supposed to get a driver for a 17-year-old scanner that works on a 64bit ARM CPU? At least VueScan works without an OS driver.

This very well-received ebook was sold from the LaserSoft Imaging website from 2012 until mid-December 2020, when the company abruptly discontinued it, corresponding with their launch of SilverFast 9 and a new ebook expressly for SilverFast 9 written by the owner of the company. As I received no notice of intent to discontinue it, I had to make alternative arrangements for offering it thereafter. Those arrangements are now in place and I am pleased to announce that the book is once again available, now in the PhotoPXL Store at a reduced price of USD 29.95. You may access it here: -workflows-with-silverfast-8-silverfast-hdr/

I was of the view from the outset that SilverFast need not be a universe unto itself but should be seen and leveraged in the broader context of other prominent image-editing software that adds value and options to scanning outcomes. This philosophy has proven to be both effective and appreciated in the market.

I kind of surmise that the SilverFast 9 book does not delve into the kind of SilverFast + Lightroom and/or + Photoshop integrated workflows that were a particularly important and appreciated feature of my book. But you can let us know perhaps whether what I surmise is factual or not.

This quote from Steve Jobs, as well as the support of family, friends, and loyal followers from many years are what inspired me to create this new website that is dedicated to photography. There are a lot of websites featuring photography. Many are good; in fact, many have been created and run by friends of mine. That is probably what I like most about photography. You make a lot of friends with whom, more than anything else, you share a passion and love for photography in many ways.

photoPXL was created around a dinner table with friends. This site will be about the community of photography, a place where young and old alike can share their stories, learn about the art and craft of photography, and gain an understanding of what it takes to Enhance Your Vision.

One of the most exciting features of the new site will be building a community using photographer profile pages. This will be a place where you can share your images with other readers and see what others are doing with theirs. There will also be a forum where you can ask questions and share your knowledge, further developing the sense of community.

Photography for me has always been personal. I can be really serious sometimes, working to catch a certain image, but no matter what I never forget to have fun. I want this site to mean the same thing for you and be a place where you can come and experience many photography-related topics and have fun while doing so.

A difficult 2020 that has blended into a difficult 2021 has made it harder for many of us to get outside and shoot, but that doesn't mean you have to neglect your photography. If you're like me, you probably still have years' worth of unscanned slides and negatives waiting to be tended to some rainy day, and a COVID lockdown gives you a golden opportunity.

But are you better off using the software that came with your scanner, or should you shell out for a third-party alternative to get the best results? Before I rolled up my sleeves and started scanning, I wanted to answer this question for myself.

All three applications were tested with Windows 10 version 1909 on a 2018 Dell XPS 15 9570 alongside an Epson Perfection V850 Pro scanner. SilverFast SE Plus costs $99, although it was included free in the bundle with our Epson V850 Pro. VueScan Professional, meanwhile, is ordinarily $99.95.

Since I'm looking at this from the perspective of film scanning, I'm limiting my comparisons solely to scanning of positive and negative strip film and slides, and won't be considering features like document or photo print scanning, copying, OCR, and the like.

As is often the case with software from hardware manufacturers, Epson Scan's Professional Mode user interface feels quite dated and somewhat unintuitive. It's split across five floating control panels that, together, don't leave much room to preview your slides, yet still offers fewer controls than its third-party rivals.

Optional Full Auto and Home modes simplify things, but also hide many features altogether. And it's also sometimes a little buggy. For example, no matter how I configured Windows' resolution and scaling, its un-resizable configuration dialog overflowed its borders, preventing me from being able to do things like reset app defaults.

SilverFast has only two operating modes: WorkflowPilot or Manual. WorkFlowPilot only allows single-photo scanning, and takes you through the process step by step. Some choices feel odd, though: For example it won't allow you to simply scan a standard JPEG.

Manual mode gives access to everything at once, but is very busy and unnecessarily confusing. Button colors vary for no logical reason, and active functions are indicated only with a tiny red dot. Help is provided throughout, but the many (and often redundant) buttons linking to abbreviated PDF manuals and numerous lengthy tutorial videos make its interface even more cluttered.
