Incomputer science, vanilla describes software, hardware or algorithms that have not been customized or modified from their original form.[1] The term "Vanilla software" has become a widespread de facto industry standard, widely used by businesses and individuals. The term comes from the traditional standard flavor of ice cream, vanilla.[2] According to Eric S. Raymond's The New Hacker's Dictionary, "vanilla" means more "ordinary", not "default".[3]
In context, software is "vanilla" when it's ordinary: that is, it isn't customized or expanded upon. It comes from the ice cream flavor "vanilla" which to some is considered to be ice cream's "default" flavor.
So, a vanilla library may be one that does the absolute minimum to implement a specification, while a non-vanilla library would be one that takes it one or more steps further and does something above and beyond what the vanilla counterpart does.
If the software includes extension or customisation points such as plugins, then as installed it would be the vanilla version, but once the user gets hold of it and adds and configures things as they like it, it would no longer be "vanilla."
Well, it won't be graduating (when compared to the move from alpha to beta). The move from vanilla to non-vanilla is the addition of customisations that essentially make it unique. The customisations differentiate or distinguish it from the regular version.
Computer software, and sometimes also other computing-related systemslike computer hardware or algorithms, is called Vanilla when notcustomized from its original form, meaning that it is used without anycustomizations or updates applied to it.
It derives from the time when, of the various flavours of ice-cream available, vanilla flavour was the most common, simple and often even the only one available. Other flavours were rarer and more exotic.
I know this a very old post but for posterity purposes. Simply put Vanilla is the raw, un-altered, plain, form of a thing without modification. E.g : vanilla js means javascript as it is without frameworks like react, jquery, etc and vanilla sql means sql without orm like laravel eloquent for instance.
In computer science, vanilla is the term used to refer when computer software and sometimes also other computing-related systems like computer hardware or algorithms are not customized from their original form, i.e., they are used without any customizations or updates applied to them. (Wiki)
It's important to note the difference between "release" and "version" here: while you might be able to build a completely fine running forum from the sources on GitHub if you are a developer, there hasn't been any release which wasn't usable out of the box since release 2021.009.
I'm willing to answer questions for any senior members here that want to build, vet, and update the latest version in the addon directory. Unfortunately I'm not willing to lead that process myself any longer. I kept those releases going by my own force of will for more than 5 years and I'm tapped out.
About 1 year ago, the dashboard showed that the 2011.011 rel was ready for install and I did because of some security issue affecting the old rel. running the forum, but then, still having some new important errors that were never fixed.
Having this bad experience, to downgrade to the 2011.09 scare me at the point to don't want to do that! Why they don't have a quality's check and test staff, causing to have forums so badly builted around?
I will announce it far and wide when it is. I'm in a similar boat, so rest assured it will get completed. Currently working on reverse-engineering the custom Quill parsing used on this rich text editor so content comes thru fully intact (to the extent the software is compatible). The initial release will only add Flarum as an output (in addition to Vanilla) but I do intend to add others and planned ahead for it.
I compiled 2022.007 if anyone is interested. Running OK in my environment so far. I hard coded the version in the environment.php rather thn use a version file like pioc34 did. Update script is failing - need to look into why, perhap the DB update script can be run seperately from phpmyadmin. Will report my findings
My issues with running utility/update were caused by the update utility not being able to rename the column `Plugins.Tagging.Add` to Vanilla.Tagging.Add in the table `GDN_Permission` - which an old upgrade step from 2.x as I understand it. Once I deleted the old Plugins.Tagging.Add column I was able to go to utility/structure and run the scan there and manually run the SQL commands to add more tables for the new version to use. This got rid of the errors I was having creating new discussions.
I tried to install the 2021 base. All I get is a 500 error. I don't know how to hook up the installation to the MySQL database I created for it. The installation instructions are too vague. They should be very clear every step of the way. I don't really know my server details, but I am on PixelHost and use Direct Admin. I think it's an apache server, but I am not sure. It's a so-called "unlimited" wordpress hosting package. PixelHost is located in Australia and support reply time is very slow--the worst thing about this host. I run on PHP version 8.1. Can someone please help me install the 2021 base successfully then upgrade to the May 15 2023 version 008? Is this upgrade possible from version 2021.009? Please PM me if you can help. Thanks!
Same 500 error. How do you connect to the MySQL database? What exactly am I doing wrong? My hosting support stopped answering me on May 26th. I don't know why. Is there an auto-installer that actually works?

i have a chocolate recipe for which I use cocoa powder. I would like to make a vanilla version but don't know what substance to use to substitute for the "powder" which adds considerable volume. I do not want to use solid chocolate.
This would be much easier if we knew exactly what you're trying to do. "A beverage with significant cocoa content that I want to change to vanilla" leaves us doing a lot of guessing. Is this a hot cocoa that you want to be vanilla, a milkshake, a cocktail of some sort?
i dont know what you are doing but I suggest you just exempt the cocoa all together, figure out the weight of the rest of the ingredients and add a certain percentage of another flavoring ingredient to infuse (ie vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, fruit etc). Depending on what type of vanilla you are using it will probably be something around 1% to the entire recipe.
Yeah why does it matter what percentage of dry mass is in a beverage? Is it like...hot cocoa with no cocoa? I guess I would use a little tapioca starch to emulate that mouthfeel...although I have no idea if that's what you're trying to do or not.
Don't know if they're in NYC but in California we also have Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf stores. Long before Starbucks launched their frappucino type drinks, CB&T was selling "ice-blendeds" all over the place. In addition to coffee flavors, you could order them in pure vanilla or pure chocolate. And, of course, you could also get a hot vanilla as well as a hot chocolate from them. I would get them for the kids when they were little. And they sell the stuff in the stores so you can make it at home. I'd either go buy that or go look at the ingredient list.
The original release of SIGIL requires a limit-removing source port to run. I wanted to create a purely vanilla version mainly for two reasons: 1) To be able to run Episode 5 in the original DOOM.EXE for retro reasons and 2) To make SIGIL available for people who depend on vanilla compatibility, for example console ports of DOOM.
I went through all the maps in chocorenderlimits as well as Chocolate Doom to make sure it adheres to all the limits. Most common limits breached were (unsurprisingly) the visplane limit and the drawseg limit. In my modification process, I put emphasis on keeping the gameplay as similar to the original as possible. This meant I avoided layout changes and prioritized removing detail from non-gameplay areas. Despite that, some changes were unavoidable - most notable is the Cyberdemon maze in E5M6 which is infamous for the notches on the walls that hinder movement. I tried to keep them as hard as I could but they had to be removed in the end because they just ate up all the drawsegs which caused half the room to disappear into the hall of mirrors.
Going too far into the lava towards the edge of the map in E5M2 and E5M5 will cause a visplane overflow (caused by the cracks on the floor and ceiling but I decided to keep this detail because you should die from the lava before you manage to get here).
I am switching work computer and I want to get rid of many local Sitecore instances. I have 30+ instances from 7.0 to 8.2. To find out which Sitecore instances I can safely delete and which ones need a backup, I would like to compare them with their vanilla out of the box state. I would like a report with the additional and modified files, plus the additional/modified Sitecore items.
The items in a vanilla instance have no common markers. It's not like e.g. in the Windows File System where files could be marked with the archive bit, which would then be cleared as soon as something was changed on the file.
You could record all the vanilla Item IDs and Revision numbers, of your Sitecore installation. But these are not available on public record (but I might be getting an idea as I write this) - so there would be no way for you to determine this on your 30+ instances. You would, as a minimum, need to install 1 of each version of Sitecore you have in use to produce the vanilla footprint - and then use some sort of tool to compare this footprint against your instances.
