Therequired 1L course studies modern practice in civil suits, including rules governing pleading, joinder of parties, discovery, jurisdiction of courts over the subject matter and parties, right to jury trial, appeals, and res judicata and collateral estoppel, with emphasis on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and their Colorado counterparts.

1L year is busy, and it is understandable if you do not have the time to read additional study materials. Luckily, Wolters Kluwer and West Academic have some great audio and video study aids you can listen to. Here are a couple of good resources:

If a researcher is not familiar with federal civil procedure, including the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, it is helpful to consult secondary sources. Note: A practitioner is more likely to use a comprehensive multi-volume treatise (examples: Federal Practice and Procedure, available in Westlaw and Moore's Federal Practice, available in Lexis). These multi-volume treatises are highly useful when one seeks an in-depth discussion of a particular rule and wants to find cases interpreting the rule.

This guide's purpose is to aid practitioners and law students in researching New York civil practice. The guide identifies key civil practice resources and also provides search tips and strategies. This guide is by no means exhaustive. For a detailed discussion of New York legal resources, please see William H. Manz, Gibson's New York Legal Research Guide, (4th ed. 2014).

This guide features study aids for first-year law classes that are available in the W&L Law Library. If you have questions about using or finding any of these resources, please contact the library by email at law...@wlu.edu and a librarian will respond to you promptly.

Print study aids may be borrowed from the Reserve Collection at the Law Library's Circulation/Reserve Desk for up to 2 hours. Older editions may be found in the Law Library stacks. For more study aids in the Law Library's collection, please consult our Study Aids guide.

If you are a visual learner, these logic maps provided an excellent study guide to understand the twists and turns of civil procedure, especially for the more complicated aspects of civ pro, like the Erie Doctrine. Chances are high you can also use this book in your practice eventually.

These on-demand video lectures complement how you study and what you are learning in class. They are broken into sections so you can easily overview entire subjects or just review specific subtopics. You can also watch a lecture at twice the normal speed to review complete subjects in a matter of hours.

BARBRI 1L Mastery comes with hundreds of online multiple-choice and essay practice questions. To help you reinforce the substantive material, they correspond to specific sections of the video lectures. In addition, you can hone your writing skills by analyzing the model essay answers.

The multiple-choice practice questions are designed to test your understanding and memorization of the black letter law for each 1L subject (except Personal Property, which instead has short answer review questions). In fact, most law school final exams are multiple-choice. Watch a lecture, outline your notes and work practice questions for the most effective learning and retention.

Law school exams are graded on a curve. What distinguishes students who score the most points? The ability to systematically analyze fact patterns and effectively communicate a mastery of the law. Our online, on-demand Exam Taking Strategies Workshop teaches you how.

"As a 1L BARBRI was such a useful guide in order to understand the many complicated nuances that were involved with the core classes that year. I watched every single lecture by Professor Freer and to this day I will attest that he is the reason why I came to love Civil Procedure as my first year came to an end. The layout of the 1L mastery courses is so effective yet simple it makes understanding such overwhelming concepts feel like an attainable goal. I am so glad I found BARBRI and the mastery courses when I did."

The authors cover each Federal Rule of Civil Procedure, which guides civil law. For each, they also explain how it has been interpreted and how it is used in practice. For judges, it is designed to help them find answers in the formation of judgments, while attorneys find it useful in preparing the best possible cases for their clients.

In the past decade, the treatise has been cited hundreds of times by federal courts, especially district courts, one of the most important venues in civil procedure. Attorneys have cited it exponentially more times in preparing their briefs for courts. The design allows attorneys and judges to find quick, yet nuanced, answers to questions regarding the federal rules presented by impartial civil procedure experts.

The 2020 edition features updates to rules, information on rulings that have affected them and reactions to rulings from lower courts. The authors also provide emphasis on matters critical to practice such as pleading and amendments, motions to dismiss, discovery and summary judgment.

Search in the Law Library's Academic Success Annex collection of study aids for "Civil Procedure" for books, audio recordings, and flashcards. You can also see a few suggestions throughout this guide.

Chat service will not be offered during the summer months. You can still type a question in the box. The box will be regularly checked and answered. You can also email any of the law librarians with your question, and we'll get right on it.

The Law Library has many study aids in the Academic Success Annex but, many of them are part of a series. A list of the major series and a description of each is below. (Clicking on the series name brings you to a list of titles and call numbers in the Law Library catalog.)

Crunchtime outlines are designed for exam studying. Each book contains flowcharts and capsule summaries of major points of law and critical issues, as well as exam tips for identifying common traps and pitfalls, sample exam and essay questions with model answers

Emanuel Law Outlines are well-correlated to all major casebooks to help you to create your own outlines. Sophisticated yet easy to understand, each guide includes both capsule and detailed explanations of critical issues, topics, and black letter law you must know to master the course.

The Examples & Explanations ("E&E") series provides an alternative perspective to help you understand your casebook and in-class lectures. Each E&E offers hypothetical questions complemented by detailed explanations that allow you to test your knowledge of the topics in your courses and compare your own analysis.

Hornbooks are one-volume treatises written primarily for law students on subjects typically covered by law school courses. Unlike casebooks, which are collections of cases (or excerpts of cases) chosen to help illustrate and stimulate discussion about legal issues, hornbooks attempt to summarize and explain the law in a specific area.
