PalmDesktop is the desktop companion software for all Palm devices. It allows users to view, sort, find, edit, back up, and add anything to Palm OS handhelds. This update features a new user interface, useful new views, and timesaving features, such as a Hide/Show/Mask Records function and a resizeable memo window. Additionally, it also includes improved security and new ways to share, send, and receive appointments and address book information.

The problem isn't with the HP Mini. That computer is running Windows 7 Starter and it Hotsyncs perfectly with my Tungsten C Handheld. The issue is with a Dell Vostro, but because it is a Palm problem, I hope you can help.

My Dell Vostro was upgraded to Windows 10 in September. I had some problem getting the Palm to sync at that time, but I figured it out and successfully synched Date, Address and Memo bases all the way up to the Windows 10 update that Microsoft pushed around Christmas.

The first Hot Sync attempt after the update saw my Address Book disappear from the Desktop ONLY (Running version 6.2.2) and I have not been able to figure out how to restore the Address Book to the Desktop.

On the PC that has the data, go up to File/Export (while Address Book is open and being viewed). This will produce a file that you can copy to the Dell PC. Use a flash drive, cloud service, SD card - whatever.

Are you running Palm Desktop 6.2.2 on both PC's? Or does the first have version 4.x? I believe the 6.2.2 version will not read the older PIM data (Address Book, Datebook, etc.) Please view this thread for instructions to download a patch:

Thank you. I will try your suggestions shortly. Both computers are using Palm Desktop ver 6.2.2. HP mini is Windows 7 and hotsynchs perfectly. Dell with latest Windows 10 evaporated the Address Book only (which seemed strange to me, especially since the address file remained in tact on the handheld.) So i am hoping that the shift to handheld overides desktop will be the solution. I did notice that a backup file for the Address Book is maintained in a palm data file on my harddrive. It is dated the day of the update and is more than eight times the size of the current in use address file. It is same size as active file on mini. Is there a a way to restore that file on the Dell?

Bingo. Even I could figure out how to import the .aba file. It marched right in and synced with the trusty Tungsten C. (The guys at Pimlico Software said: "You may find a hard time trying to find someone else using such an ancient Palm device with Windows 10."

Recently, I had to re-image the C drive on my laptop, and re-install WinXP, which in turn meant reinstalling all the applications. Tedious, but not a worry because all my data was safe on the other D partition, and I had all the original CDs.

Thank you so much for this very helpful information. Not being the techinical geniuses that everyone else seems to be in the above comments, I was still able to follow your very simple instructions and was able to successfully re-establish a connection with my saved desktop file. Thank you so much for publishing this information. ?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I spent days and days trying to get my data to show up in the Palm Desktop program (Windows 10). Nothing worked until I followed your directions! Now it is all there, and stays there when I close and re-open the program.

I picked Palm Desktop version 4.1.4 to help me manage my personal and professional life. I stayed with that specific version, Palm.exe 4.1.4 because it is compact(600Kb), very reliable, responsive and works very well under Windows 10. Palm Desktop 4.1.4 came out in 2005. The earlier versions of Palm Desktop were not good enough while the newer versions had issues. Because version 4.1.4 is so lenient every bit counts, a single byte can contain numerous parameters like colors and categories. I am using Palm Desktop as a Personal Information Manager. I use the four core applications that are Contacts, Calendar, Memos, Tasks. In my configuration, I have one Master computer to keep Palm Desktop up to date. I also have multiple Windows 10 computers that have access to shared Palm Desktop data. I synchronize the data using the network. The role of the Master Computer is to keep the Palm Desktop database uptodate, create backups and copy data to a shared directory on my router on a very regular basis. The shared directory just could have been located on a file server since I am using UNC(Universal Naming Convention). Because there is no built-in mechanism to lock files, multiple users can launch Palm Desktop but they should not modify data. Only the Master computer should be used to update Palm Desktop. For a router I use an RT-AC68u with a USB hard disk attached to it. It then becomes a NAS(Network Attached Storage.)

One of the more popular threads on the old Palm Support Community, which seems un-findable here, is the instructions to perform a clean uninstall of Palm Desktop software prior to attempting a reinstallation. Here they are, as best as I have been able to locate them:

You should first make a copy of your data. If you have Palm Desktop 4.2 and lower you can copy your user folder by going to C:\Program files\Palm or PalmOne. Once in here look for your username and right click on it and copy it. Then open up My Documents and Pasting it in here. If you have Palm Desktop 6.2.2 go to My Documents/Documents --> Palm OS Desktop. Copy the folder(s) in here and Paste them in My Documents/Documents

Now you will need to uninstall Palm Desktop. First go to Control Panel and in XP go to Add and Remove documents, in Vista Programs and Features. Then look for Palm Desktop and uninstall it. Then go to C:\Program files\Palm or C:\Program files\PalmOne and delete this folder. If you have Vista you will need to go to here:

C:\Program files\Palm

C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or PalmOne

C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\Palm or PalmOne

*Note you may need to view hidden folders to get to appdata. To do that go into your Control Panel and open folder options. Go to view tab and uncheck hide hidden files.

One this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your registry.

Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel you are unsure of your self see if you have a friend that can help you or a PC technician that you can pay to help you. This will show them everything they need to delete. To help against this we need to do a backup.

Go to start and run type "regedit" without quotes

Highlight MY COMPUTER, go to File --> export. Should pop up with a Save As box. Current location is fine should be in My Documents. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.

Easiest way to make sure your doing the right one highlight the key i.e. Palm Quick Install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.

If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician. BUT do not turn off your computer.

The Registry keys are as follows (Note: some of these Registry keys will not be here but if they are, delete them)

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc.

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmOne

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource

Next reboot your computer

Then reinstall your palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks you for a username and you synced your device before, put in 'test" if you did not sync before create a hotsync name.

The last ever version of Palm Desktop for Mac [4.2.2] was released in 2008 - though 4.2.1 is more common, & still available if you look around - -desktop.en.softonic.com/palm though I haven't run the Mac version in a long time, so compatibility might be suspect.

I've found it's simpler to use a VM of Windows 7 & install to that - though my Palm iQue 360 installer now fails on anything other than a backup restored drive, as the associated internet app downloader points to nowhere.

Families can be together forever... RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop kinselas (IS/IT--Management)(OP)3 Sep 02 18:51Thank you for the support. This has been confirmed by Palm support RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop rachelpeine (Instructor)14 Jun 04 22:05Can anyone help - I have palm desktop software installed on my standalone Windows 2000 machine, and today when i clicked on my desktop icon I got a blank textbox that says "users". i then got "error, invalid configuration, terminating Palm desktop". what the heck is going on? thanks, Rachel RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop AlphaGuy (MIS)17 Jun 04 00:02Did you install the Desktop Software while logged in as you, or a different user? As mentioned above, the Palm Desktop software needs to be installed for each user individually.

A couple of items to consider while performing the install:

1. If you want other users to be able to see your data when they open the Desktop Software (while logged in as another user), you should all use the same install path (default). Normally this would be:

C:\program files\palm

2. If you want to keep your data little more private, and would like to be able to install various conduits (say one user wants to sync with the Desktop Software, and another user with MS Outlook), then you should change the install location for each user. Something like the following would probably be a good idea:

C:\program files\palm\username

In any case, you'll need to reinstall the Desktop Software while logged in as the user that will be using it, and you'll need admin rights when doing so (note, as mentioned above, that the admin rights may be taken away after the installation is complete).

I hope this helps

AlphaGuy RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop Stevearino (MIS)8 Jul 04 10:42Has anyone tried installing this on a Windows Terminal Server?

Sounds like a nightmare having to log in as every user on every server after giving them all admin rights and then removing those rights once I am done.

RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop LloydSev (ISP)13 Apr 05 12:19I have Palm Desktop installed in a multi-user environment.. About 60 people use Palm Desktop on 1 system each with their own account.

Never had any problems.. now today I had to redo a system and this is the error I get when trying to open Palm Desktop.

I also can not select Local USB as a place to sync from..

It CAN be done in a multi-user environment, seeing as I have 20 other PCs doing it right now. Computer/Network Technician

CCNA RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop LloydSev (ISP)19 Apr 05 13:01Problem Fixed.

I found a solution.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\US Robotics\

Export that ENTIRE key from the account which originally had Palm Desktop Installed on it.

Now you can setup the reg file to run silently on StartUp in AllUsers so that AllUsers can run Palm Desktop with no problems.

The command to do so would be

regedit /s %Path%\Palm.reg

If this file runs, then Palm Desktop WILL open up and work correctly under EVERY account on the machine that this file is run under. Computer/Network Technician

CCNA RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop Igore (IS/IT--Management)6 Jun 05 11:07I am getting the same error message that is mentioned here. I have re-installed the Palm SW while logged on as the user in question using the "Run As" option to get around the Admin rights for install. The Program seems to install. It even appears to Sync, but when I try to get into the Desktop part of the App to see if the data did in fact Sync, I get the Error: invalid configuration ....

Does the program require elevated rights to open the Program? I know that Lotus Notes (crap messaging SW) requires the users to have write permissions to the Lotus directory or else the program will not run. Could it be something similar to that?

RE: Invalid Configuration - Terminating the Palm Desktop SambK (IS/IT--Management)8 Sep 05 12:05LloydSev, please tell me a little more about using the command for the exported registry key. I will export the key from either the admin or user registry hive. Does this command run under the user with the problem? (Start - run - command syntax)? googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1406030581151-2'); ); Red Flag This PostPlease let us know here why this post is inappropriate.
