*Workshop Teachers!*

Denys - Denys Proteau, aka Karadeniz, is a dancer's favorite musician and a musician's favorite dancer! He remains an amateur performer with professional sensibilities and experience, having participated in hundreds of music and dance shows spanning over two decades. A veteran of the Pittsburgh International Folk Theatre, the Bulgarian and Macedonian Benevolence Association dancers, Ghawazee Middle Eastern Music and Dance Ensemble, Khafif, Turku, and various Scandinavian, Bulgarian, Turkish, and International bands and dance troupes, Karadeniz continues to seek out new physical and spiritual experiences. When he's not playing spoons or cumbus-ud, you might find him swing dancing or shooting arrows from a primitive bow.

    •    Melody Workshops Friday, Saturday and Sunday – Mediterranean Songs for Instruments and Voice:
This coming year's music class will feature songs of the Mediterranean Islands and Coasts.  Bring your sound recording devices such as digital video-sound recorders, mp3 recorders, tape recorders, or wax cylinders.  Be prepared to learn by listening, clapping, humming, singing, and finding the notes on your instrument.  Scores and lyrics will be provided on paper for people who really prefer those devices.

Nevik - Kevin "Nevik" Hartnell comes from a family of drummers raised in Illinois. 34 years of drumming experience has seen him involved with musical projects ranging from big band to punk, country to goth, metal to folk. He began his professional drumming career at the age of 12. Credits include thousands of performances across the United States and parts of Europe and Scandinavia, studio session work since the age of 15, a handbook on drumming, music published in film as well as in television commercials & dance instructional/performance videos, and teaching drums since 1997. He is also a photographer, graphic/web designer, fan of Indian food, and more recently a new father. He is currently busy working on the second CD with the band Teribus, a drum and bagpipe band based in Texas.

August - August taught himself to play the accordion as angsty teenager, and after discovering Middle Eastern music, began working with tribal dancers in 1999. Discovering a mutual interest in Balkan music and quirky party songs, he formed The Mezmer Society with Onça (of Baraka Mundi) in the fall of 2007. They have taught and performed at events including Tribal Fest, TribalCon, and Tribal Revolution, and they are scheduled to continue touring throughout the United States. The Mezmer Society is fully committed to spreading the aesthetic of hafla joy as quickly and loudly as possible. In addition to to The Mezmer Society, August is a member of the quartet Ashes in Order, and maintains a career as an internationally-represented figurative painter. He is the president of the Institute for the Advancement of Occultism and Aerophonics (previously the Asheville Accordion Club), and he has released albums with the cinematic trio Soora Gameela, and Greek fusion band Makari. August lives in Asheville, North Carolina and is currently working on material for his first solo album.

    •    Sing, Gadje, Sing! - We will learn how to sing some Southeastern European songs, explore different ways to harmonize with each other, and deepen an appreciation for loud, clashing notes. (All levels. For everyone who wants to sing, plus melody and percussion accompaniment.)

Awalim - Awalim was formed in 1999 under the direction of Ziah Ali McKinney-Taylor as a group to bring World Fusion Tribal belly dance to the stages of Atlanta and the Southeastern US. Awalim's particular flavor of tribal dance is decidedly upbeat and earthy while being sophisticated and urban, bringing Atlanta's strongest characteristics to the Tribal genre. What does Awalim mean? Awalim is plural for Almeh. An Almeh was an educated entertainer that was very highly regarded in Egypt during the 1800s. She was educated in music, poetry, song, dance, history, religion and politics. All of these things were considered important and interconnected knowledge for any real artist. The Awalim were very well-respected and left Cairo when Napoleon's invading army treated them as common entertainers. Education is very important to Atlanta's Awalim Dance Company, and they all study at least one musical instrument along with the finger cymbals (zils), as well as the history and sociology of the widespread area that is called the Middle East which brings them (and their audience) closer to an understanding of the culture they emulate.
