Some people using Windows Mail under Vista seem to think that
Windows Mail can't see it, and I'd like to make sure what's happening.

Lets see, your using Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6001.18000, Starkiller
is using Forte Agent 2.0/32.652, I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14
(Windows/20080421) and I see alt.binaries.food as well. Also there is
alt.binaries.food.sushi for your enjoyment!
Since your on Vista running Windows Mail, go to "Tools" folder then "Newgroups" and select "Reset List".
Once its reset, key food in the search window, and vow-ala good eats.......

So far as I know, the server's newsgroup 'manifest' is little more than a
downloaded list.

Looks like I'll have to try installing another newsreader program, such as
Windows Live Mail, to see it that helps.

Interesting. Somewhere on your harddisk that list has to exist as a
physical file. Mine (Forte Agent) is a readable file called Groups.dat. At
least a million to one, yours will not be called that and may or may not be
easily readable. But it is somewhere, called something.
Does anyone know the name of the physical file for the newsgroups list in
Windows' Mail and where it is located? (Google was not overly helpful)
Robert, if you can bring that file into wordpad or something, you can search
it to see if it has the newsgroup in it. Then, with that new knowledge and
89 cents, Waffle House will give you a cup of coffee.

For what its worth, alt.binaries food is right between
alt.binaries.fontscomp and alt.binaries.sushi.
Just for funsies, you can grab freeagent and download groups for
verification.

I'll ask in the microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail newsgroup, which is the
best place I've found to find experts on the Windows Mail program.

Yes. No useful results. Also, I just tried a disk search for all of
my user's files containing alt.food.binaries, and the search reported
about 70 files, but I wasn't able to find it in any of these files.
This suggests there's also a bug in the search program, since it
should have at least found the last few messages mentioning it,
and if the newsgroups list for the bellsouth.net server is in ASCII,
it should have found both it and alt.binaries.food.sushi there.

Well, keep in mind that even if BS downloads it in ASCII, it might be
transmogrified into a proprietary format by Windows mail.........
Come to think of it, it has to come down in a MIME format and be translated
from there........ (Hey, Dennis, correct me as needed)

The following steps are a temporary work-around for this bug, which we
have submitted to Microsoft;
1) Remove newsgroups account from WindowsMail.
2) Remake your newsgroup accouont in Windows Mail.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE LIST OF GROUPS!
3) Click on Start, then Run.
4) In the text box, type:
news://addressof.your.newsISP/alt.binaries.food and hit enter.
(This will open up the group in Windows Mail.)
5) Right-click on the groupname in the left panel, then left-click on
Subscibe in the dropdown menu.
6) Repeat steps 3 -5 for any other groups that you have this same
problem with.
7) Now you can download the list from the server and proceed like
normal.
Again, this is a temporary fix until Microsoft fixes the bug.
