This is posted from the cheese server. It does not carry this group. If
it makes it here it confirms my idea that most NNTP servers have a 'master
list' of newsgroups with some newsgroups that are flagged as 'active' --
or something like that, but if a crosspost is made to a newsgroup 'active'
on that server, then the others are also respected, active or not.........

Since about 6:30 AM, 6/19, the BS server seems to be
unresponsive...............

It is responsive now. Dennis, am I correct in the above?

Yes, if you include a bellsouth.net.* group in your crosspost to a
"universal" group such as "alt.test " from an "outside" server, it will
make it to the BS newsservers. :)
This has been "common knowledge" here for quite some time...

In my experience, it applies to any newsgroup in any hierarchy -- try it and
then add that to the "common knowledge". ;-)

You *may* be able to crosspost to a group that is not on your own
server. As long as your server carries at least *one* of the groups
listed in the header, and you make that valid group the *first* in your
newsgroups listing, it *should* accept your post and propagate it (and
all of the header information) on to other servers. If other servers
carry those groups, then pointers to your post will appear in all the
specified newsgroups.

For at least some newsgroups servers, that works only if the first
newsgroup on the crosspost list is carried on that server. I got
your message from the BS server.

Thanks. I am on the BS server now as the headers show, though headers will
also show that my original message was from the server named "motzarella' --
I just call it the cheese server.

Read my reply again more slowly... ;)

This is posted from the cheese server. But the crosspost is reversed this
time. If it does not make the BS server, it will support Robert's thesis.

This is posted from the cheese server.

The news servers appear to be dead this morning for the atlanta local
area.

About 5:30 even the Bellsouth email was unreachable.

6:30 Email now active. News servers down.

????

Dennis, if you have the time, please email reply to the username from
trace. At this time, I have no access to messages in this newsgroup.

Thanks,

I am accessing this newsgroup though astraweb. I am unsure of how well the
newsgroup is propagated here, though, because getting "all" messages
returned 6.

I believe bellsouth.net is trying to keep the rest of Usenet from reaching
this
newsgroup, and is blocking messages to this newsgroup posted on other
servers from reaching their server, so Dennis isn't likely to see your
message.
As far as I know, they're also trying to block the other direction for this
newsgroup.

You might want to try email to newsmaster @ bellsouth.net (with a suitable
unmunging) and see if that gets anywhere.

The error messages I get from trying to connect to the newsgroup indicate
that they're now requiring SSL for connections to their newsgroups server,
but setting it as the error messages suggest only changes what error
messages
I get.

Thanks, Robert. It is times like these that we need external access to this
