I just purchased an Alcatel 1000 ADSL modem on EBay. The model number is
3EC15223AB AA MREV 04 ICS 04. It has a date of October 1997. Can I use this
modem with Bellsouth Fastaccess? When I plug the modem into the phone line
it never sync's up. I am currently using the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem
and wanted to get an ethernet model. I read somewhere that the jack needs to
be rewired or I need to purchase a line swap for this modem. I tried
switching the jack and that did not help. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Bill

If you need help identifying your device type, please call BellSouth
FastAccess DSL Technical Support at 1-888-321-2375.

Some suggestions can be found here:

Might want to locate a specific firmware update though...

Thank you for the suggestion of contacting Bellsouth support, however it is
my understanding that they will not support any equipment except that which
is purchased through Bellsouth. It that correct? The links you provided are
also useful.

Thank you,

Bill

That sound like a good suggestion. It seems like this modem does not have a
http or telnet interface. Quoting an internet source "Alcatel 1000s modems
with product codes of "AAAA" (Rev E.) and/or "ABAA" do NOT have a HTTP or
Telnet interface." How would one configure this modem without the http or
telnet interface?

Thank you,

Bill

If the modem will not synch there is only one of two things it could be:
1) It requires signal on pins 2 and 5 instead of 3 and 4
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6276
or
2) the modem is dead.

VPI/VCI will not keep your modem from synching.

Its a free call, and you bought it, "from another Bellsouth customer". I'm
sure its worth the investment of time...

I think you have a problem.

I have an old Alcatel 1000 issued by Bellsouth, model number
3EC18202ABAA. I also have an Alcatel STH 3EC18204BCAA

Contrary to your other post, my A-1000 ABAA unit does have an http
interface, but it doesn't have a telnet interface.

Although the code number descriptions in the following URL are stated
to be for Alcatel STH modems, they also hold true for my Alcatel 1000,
in the area relavent to this discussion.

http://www.mynetwatchman.com/kb/adsl/alcatelsthpcode.htm

If you do the translation on the digits 223 for your unit, they reveal
for the first digit 2 that it expects signal on its pins 2/5, which
means a line swapper or jack rewire are needed, but that isn't a show
stopper.

The show stopper is the second digit 2, Modem Type, which means Full
Rate (ETSI), ISDN Overlay. This can not possibly work or be made to
work on the type of service you have.

I haven't seen any documentation for the full meaning 3EC15's
numbering scheme. But something tells me Alcatel wouldn't change the
scheme drastically - it did hold across the 1000 and STH product lines
for the two modems I have, and it's probably a safe bet you have an
ISDN Overlay modem.

Sorry.

I agree...... this sounds like an ISDN version and not compatible with
Bellsouth (or anyone else's ADSL).
I wonder why anyone wants to buy the manufacturer discontinued Alcatel 1000.
Why dont you just buy the Westell from Bellsouth ? then you dont have to
worry about compatibility or support issues?

you might set a static ip address 10.10.10.10 and try to surf to the modem,
then you can see if has the correct 8,35

you can call support and the modem is supported, the tech wont care
where you bought it! granteed that the front line agent is most lokely
not goin gto be able to help you. Call and ask for a supervisor this way
you can getthe help you need or they will send you up the line to tier 3
which will call you back and work with you on this issue. Good Luck!

Thanks for the information. This modem is clearly marked 1000 ADSL on the
modem itself, the box, and the documentation. I got a line swap and it did
not help either. I spoke with the company who I got the modem from and they
agreed it is DOA and will refund my money.

Thanks,

Bill

Thank you for the information. As to why I do not "just buy the Westell from
Bellsouth." There are two reasons (1) I am graduating from seminary in
December (which means low bank account balance). I only paid $17.00 for this
modem compared to whatever Bellsouth charges for the Westell. (2) Since I
will be graduating in December, I do not know where I will be living after
that, therefore I am unable to make a 12 month commitment to Bellsouth in
order to get a free modem, which means I am back to reason number 1 - having
to purchase an expensive modem. After being a systems analyst for over 16
years it seems like a fairly simple thing to purchase this modem and install
it myself. It is clearly marked 1000 ADSL. However, I have since found out
that the modem is DOA, and the company is refunding my money. I really
appreicate everyones help with this problem, and am glad to meet so many
helpful people.

Thanks,

Bill

Well, from the complete model number you posted, it's clearly the
wrong modem for the type of service you have, and probably not DOA.
But you're getting your money back, so that's good.

If you wind up looking at more A-1000s, make sure they are numbered
for your service type.

Don't bother with the A1000. Get either a Speed Touch Home/Pro or the
Westell. I've experienced 2 A1000's that just one day decided to no logner
sync. Never had an issue with either a Speed Touch or Westell. Plus the
Speed Touch and Westell models are much better when using close to the 18K
feet distance from the DSLAM.
