Yo Dave

I really appreciate your expertise, and kindness towards us lesser beings, it's a huge help and a rare combination.

I've more shell to explore and some time in the year I'd like to work with R-Pis or Beagles. Somehow I have to find time to master the graphics and programming I still hope to use one day. I'm probably way short of robotting for now, and if I can't reliably find what died in my fridge IoT probably won't help much. I do have some experience with general and machine wiring and troubleshooting, and working with relays and shop-sized motor control, also an older generation of programmable controllers (ladder logic), which might be useful to others.

My sole heir is 7 already and I want to get a bit further on in case he gets interested in tech (he's already addicted to Minecraft)

I'll try and get there in time next week

You're welcome! As for greater and lesser beings, "being" is a verb
so anyone can "be" greater than they are - if they consciously focus
and make that a goal! I am studying "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People" by Stephen R. Covey and will bring an extra copy in case
anyone wants to borrow. I'm also willing to make available a copy of
Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution by Steven Levy.

I will bring my "Freematics ONE", a custom Arduino-based board out of
Australia for telematics - recording data from automobile using
OnBoard Diagnostics (OBD-II) interface, and try to get it to work for
the first time... plugged it in, with SD card and it never created a
log file, so hopefully it just requires an initial firmware.

I'm pretty glad I finally got xmobar (a status bar) working with
XMonad (my window manager) this week, I got it to show my IP address and
state of various network protocols I use. Can answer Q's about this.

Speaking of Minecraft I did recently launch a Minecraft server of the
latest version 1.12.2 and will give out the IP to people who come to
the meeting. Unmodded... Although eventually I'd like to learn
"spigot" and get a multiverse mod and portals back to my earlier world
maps. My 1.7 CraftBukkit server has portals back to various older
maps; I have to convert this to Spigot and add in the new worlds made
since then- the Foundry's server (griefed and abandoned), my other 1.8
world, and the new 1.12.2 one (barely started - like new feel free to
reply here, or e-mail me with "Minecraft Server" in the subject if you
want the IP - I've set up a filter to avoid the spam folder).

I did NOT add this link to Google Maps, this was inserted by Google

Follow me as tril0byte on Twitter, I am becoming more active there and
try to tweet out only a high quality feed of very interesting things,
and set favorites on a higher volume of somewhat interesting things.

Hi Dave

Now I have full access to gmail other than from my antique phone on a bus I'm distressed to find that the rather late message I sent to tell you I couldn't be there disappeared into the void--I hit something untoward and lost access during a sudden time-crunch: it's not even there as a draft.

(Life got really complex as Mary's sister's cancer suddenly got much worse and I had to explore cheaper ways to get south and back)

I thought the original message had gone through and I was addressing a couple of things you mentioned, but now I see it all vanished together. I hope you weren't sitting in the hallway a long time for nothing.

So far next Saturday (/13th) looks clear, but I'll try to anticipate better if things go wrong again

Im again not going to make it tonight. The family situation here in Seattle is not resolved and it may be a while.
