For the first time ever, the Australian
government is considering protecting our temperate
seas with a system of marine reserves in federal
waters off the NSW coast.
However, Federal
Environment Minister Tony Burke’s recently
released plans leave nearly all of our east
temperate seas open to trawling and
mining.
We need to tell Minister Burke that
this isn't good enough – our iconic marine species
and ecosystems need more protection from
destructive activities.
Sign
our petition today asking the Minister for
more marine national park zones in the federal
marine reserve network for the temperate
east.
The oceans off eastern Australia,
stretching from Fraser Island in the North to
Bermagui in the South and out to Lord Howe and
Norfolk Islands are of international importance.
They provide important habitat for whales, grey
nurse sharks, loggerhead turtles and unique
sub-tropical corals. Yet less than 1% of these
vast waters are effectively
protected.
People across Australia love the
ocean and now we have an opportunity to look after
it for future generations. Please tell Minister
Burke that he must safeguard the rare and
threatened temperate sea life of East Australia in
a network of large marine sanctuaries that exclude
destructive activities.
Thanks for your
support - every voice counts!
