With the "Get Ahead" program sponsorship of Daimler Trucks of North America (DTNA), through Velocity Truck Centers, our program provides the latest in manufacturer training from Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Allison Transmission, Eaton Transmissions and Western Star. Our program will prepare you for employment as an entry level technician at a Velocity Truck, Freightliner or similar heavy truck dealership.

Our students are interviewed and selected to work as interns at RDO Equipment Co. while completing their education at Citrus College. RDO looks for first year students interested in working on John Deere and Vermeer Equipment. The student must be in good standing with the MTRK program.

Our program works closely with industry partners to provide job opportunities at companies such as Quinn Caterpillar. Since 2016, our program has been participating in an internship program with Quinn Caterpillar which has provided careers to many of our students and are always looking to place more.

In late April 2021, the Citrus College Medium and Heavy-Duty Truck (MTRK) program received a donated CNG-powered Freightliner Cascadia 113" Sleeper Cab from Velocity Truck Centers and Daimler Trucks of North America. On hand to receive the donation were instructors, Mariano Rubio and Bryce Neighbors, program lab technician, Allan Weaver, and dean of CTE, Michael Wangler.

Accompanying the truck were the Velocity Truck Centers' Jason Shearer, vice president of service operations; Deborah Cegielski, vice president of human resources; and technical support manager, Manny Barba. It was a special homecoming for Jason Shearer who graduated from the Citrus College MTRK program in 2001. He worked as a technician and, eventually, moved up to the position of vice president in the company. Jason is truly one of Citrus College's success stories.

As instructors for the program, there's no better feeling than partnering with a company that provides careers to hard working students wanting to get into the field. The Citrus College truck program faculty are excited to work with the great people from Velocity Trucks. Working together, the need for qualified heavy truck technicians will be met one student at a time!

There is a constant demand for certified men and women in this field due to the high number of diesel powered on-highway and off-highway vehicles, heavy equipment, marine engines and on-site power generators. Median wage for a diesel technician is $50,200 per year. Average hourly wage is $24.13 per hour.*

Cooperative programs and sponsorships with major diesel and automotive companies support the program and ensure that the latest technologies are being taught to students. Citrus College Medium and Heavy-Duty Truck program graduates have a 90% placement rate.

Working with a repair shop that has access to the most recent truck diagnostic tools, will allow them to identify the problem with your vehicle quickly and efficiently. This is important because the sooner a technician can locate the issue's root cause, the sooner they can provide you with a solution that will get you back on the road

It's worth noting that heavy-duty truck diagnostics are increasingly becoming an important part of vehicle maintenance, especially for commercial trucks, as it helps to identify potential issues before they become major problems. In addition, regular diagnostics also help to improve fuel efficiency, reducing costs and prolonging the life of the truck.

Technicians may narrow down the issues and determine what isn't functioning correctly by running the error codes stored in the truck's computer by using diagnostics. While this may not pinpoint the exact issue with the truck it will provide valuable information to a skilled technician to direct them to the possible source of the problem. If not for vehicle diagnostics, it would take a lot of time, effort, and money to identify problems in a truck's operating systems. A truck's "unseen" parts might be acting up differently, and diagnostics can help to find problems early, which saves you money on repairs.

Unusual noises are a minor issue that might go unnoticed for a long time before becoming a much bigger problem. These severe problems might lead to downtime, potentially hazardous situations, and expensive heavy-duty truck repairs. However, a diagnostic test may identify minor issues, allowing you to address them before they result in a breakdown.

Some vehicle owners decide against spending a small amount on a quick diagnostic checkup, only later to face far more costly repairs or component replacements. Engine problems can often develop gradually and go unnoticed for a long time. If the root cause of an issue is found early on and addressed, it will always be more affordable to fix.

Modern commercial vehicle engines are more reliant on electrical technologies which makes diagnostic examinations are faster and more affordable. A skilled technician can determine any potential issues with your truck's engine, brakes, gearbox, exhaust system, glow plugs, air intake, fuel injectors, and more. More quickly than most people anticipate.

Engine diagnostics helps identify problems early on by analyzing data from sensors and computer systems in the vehicle. This data is used to detect issues such as misfires, issues with the emission control system, and problems with the fuel or ignition systems. By identifying these problems early, it allows for repairs to be made before they become more serious and costly. Regular engine diagnostic tests are a great way to detect potential issues before they cause any performance problems or breakdowns.
