Justlike RedSn0w, PwnageTool is an application developed by the iPhone Dev Team that allows you to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Unlike RedSn0w, PwnageTool creates custom iOS firmware images to user-defined specifications.
PwnageTool is an iOS jailbreak tool for Mac OS X that jailbreaks by creating a custom IPSW. You are allowed to change boot logos and add pre-installed packages to the IPSW. After an IPSW is created you can use it for restore using iTunes.
PwnageTool takes the IPSW file and patches it, creating a custom version. This enables a lot more features such as pre-installed packages, BootNeuter (iPhone software unlock), custom packages and boot logos. This method is usually less secure than the quick exploits such (redsn0w, QuickPwn, purplera1n, blackra1n, etc.).
This method does have negative aspects. The most common errors are the 16xx range of errors, which mean that the either the firmware file is corrupt or you didn't put it in the right mode (Recovery, DFU Mode). Sometimes the problems could just be a computer problem such as the memory is full or the USB port is broken. The most common error is Error 1604 which means that the firmware file is corrupted.
PwnageTool is expected to remain exclusive to Mac OS X. As of October 2009 (2009-10), iH8sn0w, et. al. has announced that they made a project that will bring PwnageTool's functionality to Windows, called sn0wbreeze. [3]
PwnageTool 3.1.5 for creating iPhone 3.1.3 custom ipsw files is now LIVE! The infamous iPhone Dev-Team has updated their PwnageTool for Mac to make it compatible with the new iPhone 3.1.3 firmware. This latest version of PwnageTool can jailbreak the original iPhone (Edge/2G), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS(older bootrom only with baseband 04.26.08) and iPod touch (1G and 2G non-MC model; 2G should also be pre-jailbroken) running on iPhone firmware 3.1.3. The custom .ipsw firmware files created with PwnageTool can update iPhone to firmware 3.1.3 without updating its baseband so that it can be unlocked to run on any carrier SIM. If you previously relied on blacksn0w unlock for iPhone 3GS, then this is NOT for you. iPod touch 3G is also currently not supported.
Note For Windows XP/Vista/7 Users: PwnageTool 3.1.5 is for Mac OS X only. Windows users should follow the guide posted here or here in order to jailbreak and unlock iPhone running with firmware 3.1.3.
Step 10: Once you are done with the unlocking and jailbreak process. You can now restore all your settings, apps, music, contacts and photos to the newly installed firmware version 3.1.3 by restoring the backup that you made in Step 2 from iTunes.
UPDATE 1: Upgraded to iPhone 3.1.3 accidently? Want to downgrade back to iPhone 3.1.2 and unlock? Follow the guide posted here to downgrade iPhone 3.1.3 baseband 05.12.01 with Fuzzyband.
The iPhone Dev Team has just updated PwnageTool to version 4.01, bringing fix for iBooks on iPhone which was problematic on pwned and hacktivated iOS devices running iOS 4. Almost everything else remains the same except for this issue, and so it is recommended that you jailbreak your iPhone again if were having issues with the last release of PwnageTool.
Again, this PwnageTool 4.01 supports iPhone 3GS (old bootrom and already jailbroken on 3.1.2), iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non MC model). Jailbreak instructions for PwnageTool 4.01 are exactly similar to the last release i.e. PwnageTool 4.0. Simply follow the guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS, 3G or iPod touch 2G using iOS 4 custom firmware.
Using seas0npass for windows, I was able to successfully jailbreak my ATV2. However, after a couple of weeks use of XBMC with it my SMB would no longer work, would get operation timeout, could not connect to network error within XBMC. Tried to SSH into the device but Putty just gave 'Network error: Connection timed out' error. I could not ping the device either.
Restored ATV2 to non-jailbreak version. Retried seas0npass & it told me jailbreak was successful. But now I cannot SSH into it. Still get 'Network error: Connection timed out' from Putty & can't ping it.
Installed and ran Seas0nPass, got the little FC logo in the bottom right but cannot SSH. Timed out error. Reinstalled Seas0nPass, updated Seas0nPass. Ran the process three or four times. Plugged in my computer directly to the router. Made sure the router has AP isolation disabled. Cannot SSH, timed out error.
Then tried PwnageTool but It does not recognize the IPSW firmware which i downloaded from three or four different sources but it says "AppleTV2,1_4.4.4_9A406a_Restore.ipsw" is not the right firmware. The apptv is updated and this is the newest firmware so it has to be correct? Can't even re jail break with Pwnagetool. :( someone please help out with this.
PwnageTool is a Mac app that allows you to jailbreak iOS devices. This "jailbreak" allows your iOS device to run unsigned content on your iPhone. Most people jailbreak their iOS devices to get access to the software that isn't available on the App store. There are other users who jailbreak to pirate applications. PwnageTool doesn't do any pirating of its own, though. It is simply an application that was designed to upgrade your iOS device with a hacked firmware that installs Cydia and Icy on it. These are new software repositories that all jailbroken devices will show when they are first booted. From there, you can download new software. Of course, you can still use the App store.
Using PwnageTool can sound scary at first. But PwnageTool is one of the tools that made jailbreaking an easy task. It is as simple as it gets. You simply connect your iOS device and follow the on-screen instructions or the guides on the DevTeam website.
I heard of people who have used this app to jailbreak their iPhones and iPod Touches and didn't have any problems. You should do this at your own risk, like it is stated on their website. There is also a list of supported devices on the website.
