Kannanstudied at Music College before beginning his career as a guitarist in 1988. Over the course of a decade, he composed jingles for about 600 commercials through the agency of C. S. Amudhan. The same agency provided the opportunity for Kannan to compose music for his film score debut Thamizh Padam (2010).[2][3] Kannan revealed that even though the film was a spoof, he "wasn't specifically asked to spoof other songs."[2] The soundtrack received positive reviews from critics who called it an "amusingly memorable debut for Kannan."[4] The songs "Pacha Manja" and "O Maha Zeeya" were well received. Kannan has received more recognition for his contributions to this film than to previous films which went largely unnoticed.[citation needed]
First and foremost few words to our friends and fellow singers from Smule Sing who had been the pillar of strength since the start of this blog. It will be a huge mistake not to acknowledge the kind of support and love towards the efforts to nurture music. Moreover, the singers who kept writing to us through messages and contact emails, send so much praise and love is the reason week after week we were able to bring these features to all you guys. In the times of test, total strangers came on board and poured in support to keep this going by spreading the good word about these efforts. You guys had been an inspiration. Here is a big thank-you moment.
This feature on Barani was made possible by Lakshmipriya who had been a great help in identifying great singers in the past. She herself is a great singer first identified by Shabir Sir through Yayum contest on Smule and later gave her an opportunity to sing for his Telefilm title song.
This feature is all about Barani. His full name is Baranidharan Kannan. it was a cold morning when we made that call on Skype and met through a video chat line. On the other end of the camera was Barani, whose voice is a killer and with the looks of a genius. It was all the more exciting to speak with him. It was an instant connection that on many levels the conversations were highly exciting and intelligent.
Conversations kicked off so easily with a lot of easiness in communication. We started with the basic whereabouts of his early life. Barani was born in Ooty (Udagamandalam- a beautiful hill station in the state of Tamil Nadu) and brought up in Chennai for the most part. He is an IT professional who graduated from a highly prestigious educational institute in India REC Silchar,( NIT Silchar now, Assam) who changed his current job function to sales from research and serious software development business. Barani very recently resettled in Chicago, USA. He came to the USA in 2014 and currently lives in Chicago with his wife and his only son.
We have to stop here and talk about this Institution whose mission is so much similar to one of our central visions. The organization is a voluntary youth movement across leading Indian college campuses, established at IIT Delhi, where singers and music lovers get together to sing, host artists on their campuses, and celebrate the music of India.
Barani said Spic Macay at REC Silchar revived to activity during his time in the college. In addition to hosting cultural programs, the chapter also organized concerts featuring great musicians like Pandit Rajan Sajan Mishra.
After a long period of inactivity, around 2005-2006, I got introduced to highly talented musicians like Murali Venkatraman, Joseph Thomas, and Meera Iyer through audio blogs, which kindled my inner passion for music. Murali specifically changed the way I listened and interpreted music.
Definitely, used effectively Music can bring people together in manners that no-one can imagine. It is like Sports, In spite of diversity and differences, countries are united and come together to support their teams to their own pride and that feel is magical.
An established artist is usually respected in society and people look up to him, so there is nothing wrong about him/her being vocal about his opinion on the social environment, especially if it serves a greater good for the society.
Interacting with Barani was the most pleasurable experience. We all know a little bit more about his musical journey and we are happy in every respect to support him in his music journey. Let us all go and support Barani Kannan in his musical journey on Smule here.
Some of the best singers in Indian music scene Unnikrishnan and Sujatha made this romantic melody a timeless classic. Joined here is our own friend Gayathri and this is almost close to the original. Absolute blissful singing this is. Listen. By now a small criticism, all these performances are so ditto to original, wish Barani could innovate something new which will make it more interesting.
SPB and Illayaraja sir. Barani said he grew up listening to Raja sir and here is another gem of composition from the Movie Unnal Mudiyum Thambi Singers: S.P. Balasubramaniam, K.S. Chitra. Absolute perfection. User ID Vishnupriyakris joined here to make a remarkable collaboration. Perfect as it can get.
There were a few record stores that sold audio cassettes with Indian film songs, Indian classical music, Indian folk music or Indian devotional music and they did not have anything from the west or other parts of the world.
So I grew up listening to cassettes that my father had collected. The Beatles, ABBA, Pink Floyd, pop music from the 60s to 80s and very few western classical music recordings that we bought during every visit to Chennai. I had a lot of catching up to do after I had access to YouTube around 2009.
When I begin to write a piece of music or score a scene, I think about all the options and the mind is really all over the place but struggles to find one particular idea, one distinct line of melody or something that fits, that feels special, that resonates. Sometimes it takes minutes to find one, sometimes hours or even days.
I have always enjoyed working on a period or a cultural film a bit more, be it real or fictional. I feel like music really has the potential to become a more prominent element or sometimes even a character under those circumstances.
My Family. All the wonderful teachers I had the gift of learning from at different stages of my life. Friends. The entire fraternity of artists, both from the past and present, especially writers, composers, musicians, filmmakers and most importantly my colleagues a lot of whom have become very good friends. So many people to thank and so much to be grateful for.

Mohan Kannan is one of the few singers-songwriters in the country who has had found fame in both Bollywood and independent music space, thanks to his heavier barritone. While he acknowledges that non-film music has gotten bigger, film music continues to dominate the airwaves and streaming platforms.
The commercial music industry, in its pursuit of chasing numbers and creating hits, often gets accused of following a formula, in terms of creating music which already exists and is popular among the masses. Kannan is quick to point out that as probably the only thing a musician should be wary of.
However, as he concludes, Kannan also feels that the current group of music composers in the film industry are creating soundscapes that are extremely different from each other, without really compromising on success.
