PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP

Hi All

For the last....lots....of years I have been working with UKU to get UKU recognised as our National Governing body. This allows individuals and the club to secure grants and funding

We were in the final rubber stamp phase at all four national sports council (Scotland, England and Wales passed the bill) when Sport NI stalled it and asked for more info.

In order to smooth the process, I have been asked to draw up an "activity list" of all Ultimate that has or is being played in NI. This can be any, from informal park sessions, youth group coaching/playing, schools, taster sessions, show events tournaments, clubs, national players or any other ultimate based activity.

Please can you take a couple of minutes to rack your brain and add anything to the list below with an approx number of players, with a brief description if you think I do not know about it.

Please also fill in the ? marks. thanks

Thanks

Please could someone do the facebook thing with this and feed it back to me? Thanks

When do you need all this info submitted by? Do you need to supply contact details for groups/clubs?

Swerve from Coleraine and Scruff from Methodist College Belfast are missing. Both clubs ceased playing about 5 years ago.

Kebab Hammer was a mixed team playing summer league and love Easter also about 5 years ago.

Great work, Sich! Sounds like you're nearly there. (Can't believe it was Sport NI who stalled it! They never respond to my emails... I'm starting to think it's personal.)

Emily McCabe also played for the Irish team (under 23 mixed?)

Dave recently got us involved in a Young Farmers evening of ultimate, organised by their Antrim branch. There were 16 teams of 8 players = 128 players, (children, teenagers and young adults) aided by 5 of us.

Remember there was that cross-community event a couple of years ago, with Henry (the French guy) as a coach? If nobody remembers more about it, I'll search the archives to find more details.

Hi Sich,

I've asked the question with Mark Robinson (Enniskillen). Then there's the Young Farmers in Antrim as Trevor mentioned. Not sure if that will become a regular thing for them, but we shall see. Then there's a lady out in Dungannon trying to start a team. We sent her 10 discs to help out. Don't think she's got too far yet.

I'll let you know the numbers from Enniskillen when I get them.

NB: I've never represented Ireland! Maybe if the position of sports economist opens up I might go for it.

Sich, I've also got detailed attendance records if you want a look. Could give you good detail on how many unique players have come and played/trained with BU in the last couple years.

Also have a good record of everyone who ever played for CHASE.

Dave.

Here's some stuff.

National Team players you missed: Emily McCabe, Ellie McConnell, Lulu Geddy Boyd, Richard Sayers, Josh McCann, Ciaran Ferris.

Game of Throws was a 40 person hat tournament. Had players from both Ireland and mainland UK.

Regionals this year a one day, 7 team tournament at Shorts. Determined who qualified for Division 1 Nationals.

Queens Ultimate has a member list of around 50 (maybe more), but active members would be roughly 20 to 25.

Filthy Animals is a NI team that played at Cracker.

We've had irregular throwing/casual sessions on a Saturday down in Botanic/Queens PEC.

Thanks Dave.

If they come back asking for proof then that will be great, but otherwise I just would like a list to show the diversity and spread in NI.

cheers

From Enniskillen Mark:

"...so on our books we have 32, however with numbers changing each we we have an average of 10 a week but this will change as uni ones go back."

History

First game of Ultimate played (that I know of) in Northern Ireland was a pick-up game on Boxing Day 2003. (It was largely organised by Will Rutherford). From what I recall, the tournament was quite good (we might have played 6s?).

First team (BUG) and regular training started in July 2004 in Botanic. First tournament we entered was Whacking Day 2004 (can't remember where we finished). We also entered Edinburgh Beginners that year and came 3rd.

We came 2nd at Sterling Tune-up in 2005, losing to Cork in the final. I don't think we bettered that finish until we came 2nd in Cork Open in 2009 (or 8, or 10), which was Ireland's top tournament at the time. We also won one of our own tournaments once. Oh, and we did quite well at Disco Inferno one year.

Tournaments

First tournament we ran was BOO, a hat tournament, at Easter 2005. (We also ran it in 2006).

Summer League first ran in 2008.  Peaked in 2009 with about 80 unique players. What year did it last run? 2011??

Hosted All-Ireland Championships in ???? and AIUC East Regionals in 2016

Xmas Cracker, started 2007? which is our longest running tournament, though it nearly didn't run one year when Valley Leisure Centre gave us less than a weeks notice they were changing their lights that weekend.

National Team players

Cormac (I can't remember his surname. He used to play for Fusion), from Derry, played for GB, I think, around 2005/6

Ruth Carleton, from Enniskillen, played for GB Womens around 2005-2009?

Welsh Scot Richard Constable played GB Masters, sometime before records began. He's based in Northern Ireland now.

Andy Gordon played World Club Mixed Championships 2005?? with an Ireland based team.

Pete Gaston played for Ireland around 2007?

Derryk Boyd played for Ireland? as well around this time?

Becca? (can't remember her surname) played Ireland Womens around 2007?

Did Will Rutherford ever play for Ireland??

Adam Glover played for Ireland around 2009

Garry Hughes played for Ireland U23 around 2009. I think he might have played full Open at sometime.

Chris Hunter (Coleraine, Swerve player) played for Ireland Juniors? and full Open.

Did Will Martin also play for Ireland? Were there other Swerve players who played for Ireland?

Ben Matthews, Richard Sayers, Josh McCann, Jack Lynch, Reuben McFeeters, Ciaran Ferris, Ellie McConnell have all played Ireland Juniors in the last 5/6 years. Did Emily play for Juniors too?

Alan McWatters, Chris Millar, Stephen Greamer, Stephen Hammond, and ???, played Ireland Open Beach 2013?

Ben Matthews also played for U23? Ireland Mixed, and Emily McCabe and Lulu Boyd played Ireland Womens last year?

Lulu Boyd is on this years Ireland Mixed Beach team.

Did Wes Frasier play Canadian Masters?

There's probably a few more names missing from this list

*Cormac Cosgrove. I remembered his surname. Going through emails, Becca's full name is Rebecca McRory

(Also, it should read "From what I recall, the turn out was quite good (we might have played 6s?)." at the end of the first paragraph. I can't post-edit emails ):
