Just thought I'd give this topic it's own discussion page for clarity.

From Pete:

"Belfast Christmas Special - 20th Dec 2008
Our very own indoor tournament returns. The Valley Leisure Centre has
been booked all day this time. No great plans as yet - just keep it
free! Also we're still targetting beginners / new players so can
everybody start thinking about whether you could piece a time together
or not. We had six local teams last year. Great if we could have 8+
this year.

Just so you know, three teams have been entered into the Christmas
Special:

1. Team Phil
2. Team Jason
3. Deep Heat
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Could everyone consider whether they could field a team.... we're
still targetting new players so you only need yourself and four
friends and you're up and running."

CHASE hope to enter 3 teams. This will be confirmed closer to the
time. Expect CHASE to have a strong presence.

If anybody is considering having cheap-ass T shirts for team colours,
I have discovered a site that sells them for just over a pound a
piece:
http://www.ethicstar.com/03.html
Might make a transfer or a stencil and spray a logo on for my team.
Stu or Darragh, any tips from your LDW and Kebab Hammer home-made
shirts?

Pete, name your team Deep Pete and stop messing about. Having the name
in is funnier.

Phil, I have an idea for your team name: Phil's Chancers, or Phil
Chan's Chancers. You see what I'm trying to do here.

Jason, sorry dude. No such inspiration for yours I'm afraid. All ideas
so far are lame.

1. Team Phil
2. Team Jason
3. Deep Heat
4. CHASE 1
5. CHASE 2
6. CHASE 3 (These will have more imaginative names - to be decided
closer to the time)
7.
8.

I'm entering 2 teams now by the way. Are we all talking proper beginners teams because that's what I have at the moment, i.e. 1 experienced + 4 beginners on the pitch + subs.

As for team names... Our executive committee meeting last night decided that our two teams will be called:

Super Magic Sparkle Angelfish Go!

and

Hyper Magic Sparkle Angelfish Go!

I will also take this opportunity to shotgun the colours lime green and magenta.

Phil.

3. Team Jason

7. CHASE 3

What were the teams from last year? I remember The Swerve being there,
and Bit O' Blue. We were in Wee Adam's Team, which has now become
CHASE. What were the other 3?

Oh, since we are shotgunning colours, CHASE will make use of existing
kit: white 'I love Comber' T shirts, and dark navy. Plus I bagsey
orange.

YES! Go Bangor. You guys should totally put a Bangor team together.
You're starting off with You, Colm and Ob. Few more beginners and
you're set! I would love a Bangor team to be in the summer league.

Also, Garry, remove the arrows ( > ) otherwise your post gets hidden.

ah great to see things moving along

before we get too much further ahead I just need to outline that there
is only space for 12 teams and it's £55 per team.

Also in regards to 'beginners', I think 1 experienced player + 4
beginners is the right place to start. For the purposes of the
tournament I'm suggesting a beginner is someone who has been playing 6
months or less. It will largely fall on the integrity of the teams
whether they meet this or not as there's absolutely no way to verify
this. But everyone needs to bear it in mind. The key objective of
the tournament is still to introduce new players to ultimate and it is
the responsibility of the teams that we meet this.

Could people let me know as soon as possible whether they are planning
on entering a team as there has been some interest from outside the
region (SCRUFF, Queens, the Swerve and LDW in particular let me know).

Finally, would people be interested in a small outdoor 7-a-side
tournament on the Sunday (to which we can definitely invite some
mexicans to, including comber)?

here's my beef :)
if there are 12 teams with only one experienced person allowed, then
will that mean some of the regulars will be left out of this
tournament?
I've the potential to get a team with some of the less experienced
members of LDW and some noobs but I know that beginners from outside
the region are pretty much better than me cos of all the practise
sessions they get at uni so is it ok to include some of the regulars
to give the team some structure, and a fighting chance of not being
thrashed?
Jizz has his team, stu is off with some other new team so i'm not sure
of who is still about from LDW anyway, perhaps the mac and kaz will
help me get some beginners together?

a few things...

it's one experienced player on the pitch at any time.... so you could
have more than one experienced player in your team but they just can't
be on the pitch at the same time.

4 beginners and 1 experienced player is what we're aiming for
initially. If people are really struggling to get that ratio, then it
can be changed but I think it's best to start from there.

At the end of the day I'm not (and nobody else is) going around
checking everybody's elligibility. All I want is for people to
honestly try and get new people players involved. It's down to the
integrity of the teams and their captains whether they stick to the
ratio..... if teams can't, then let me know and i'll see if it can be
changed with all the other teams.

Hopefully everybody appreciates the difference in circumstances
between those who go to uni and those who don't so don't feel that 6
months is a hard-and-fast rule. It's something to bear in mind - for
example, if they have been playing for more than 6 months, is this
player better than someone I would expect to have played for just 6
months? and have they played in a beginner tournament before? if the
answer is no to both, then i can't see any reason why they can't take
part. If they've played for less than 6 months, they're definitely
in.

last point.... for me teams such as the LDW, CHASE, Swerve and maybe
even Deep Heat are possibly more established than what's needed for
this tournament. So it's fine for the LDW not to be at a beginner
tournament as they've already outgrown it - the tournament obviously
can be used to recruit to those teams. Hence why i'm suggesting
another 7-a-side tournament for those bigger outfits.

On that point.... there used to be a game called the Not Boxing Day
Game on the 27th Dec up here where we would invite people from the
south to take part. We could restart this tradition and play the
small 7-a-side tournament on that day rather than Sunday 21st. The
LDW, CHASE, Swerve, maybe Deep Heat and a southern team could have a
little 7-a-side competition. It's free so there's not a lot to be
lost. Just one thing, I won't be there so it will have to be
organised by someone else.

I’ve been thinking of a way to encourage the golden ratio of 1
experienced to 4 beginner players without forcing it. We could reward
beginner teams and penalise experienced teams with a points system.
You win points normally depending on result: win - 3, draw - 1, lose -
0. On top of that, you earn half a point for each on-field position
that was occupied by a beginner player only.

Examples:
Experienced Team vs Beginner Team
Experienced Team play 5 experienced players at all times and earn no
beginner points.
Beginner Team play 1 experienced and 4 beginner players at all times
and earn 2 beginner points (4 half points).

If the match ends in a draw, Experienced Team take 1 point, Beginner
Team take 3 points and go higher up the competition.
If Experienced Team win (as expected) they take 3 points, Beginner
Team take 2 points and stay in contention.
If Beginner Team do the unexpected and win, they take the 5 point
jackpot, Experienced Team take nothing.

If at any stage of the match, Beginner Team brought out a second
experienced player, or more, they would forfeit the bonus half point
per player.

What do you think of my idea?

Instead of the beginners points, can we not 'Boo' and hurl abuse at
the more experienced teams if they win making their win not as great.

I'm against the points idea because of 2 things:

1. A beginners' tournament is primarily for those new to frisbee to play against others of the same ability in a competitive but fun environment. If a team of beginners are forced to play against a team of experienced players then they will barely get a touch of the disc and will really be put off playing at all. Frisbee is very difficult for newbies, which is why there is always so much help for beginners.

2. An experienced team will definitely win every time, regardless of how many bonus points a beginner team could potentially get. It's not going to be a lot of fun when we get bageled every match.

Those are just my thoughts and I don't have any better ideas. The only thing I can think of is that there could be an experienced tournament running on one pitch and a beginner tournament running on the other pitch. Glasgow do a one day tournament like this every year with more teams and it is very successful. I've already mentioned this to Pete.

Phil.

my thoughts just briefly....

a mixed ability tournament is definitely a consideration but i think
there's more potential if we target beginners with the Christmas
Special and put on a second tournament for larger outfits (does
anybody want to look into organising an open tournament for the likes
of CHASE, Swerve, the LDW etc? It might even be able to be indoors if
you ring around). If we see if we can get 12 beginner teams this year
and change the format for next year if that's needed.

More teams..... i'm not sure how the schedule would work. Does anyone
want to have a go at this fun little game? We have the halls for 9
hours. With 12 teams we can have 2 pools of 6, placing games (ie
11v12 9v10 7v8 5v6 etc), a final, each team plays 7 games, matches of
20 mins and a little leeway in case games over run and a small lunch.
I'm open to suggestions.

I like the points idea. I'm not too keen on teams completely
overlooking that it's a beginner tournament (so no 5 experienced
players teams - maybe a cap of 2/3 experienced players) cos i think
everyone and every team should be looking at recruiting players. It's
an extra complication but it might be worth giving a shout.

Is that 2 pitches for 9 hours? If it is, you could probably fit in a
16 team tournament. I wouldn't recommend having matches longer than
20min at a beginners tournament.

I agree with Phil. I don't think a points system will work in
practice. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the normal beginners
tournament rule of only 'beginners' being allowed to score. That way a
team of 5 experienced players can't actually score any points! Also,
experienced players have to wear a silly hat, so get out the paper
mache and chicken wire. My vote for best hat will go to whoever makes
a working model of the Belfast eye, as a hat!

With regards to 'Not Boxing Day Pick-up', this has happened every year
since 2003(ish), but it wasn't on the 27th for the first 2 years. In
the last 2 years the Dubliners have seen fit to organise they're own
pick-up game on 26th Dec in Dublin (the anti-social #*%$&£%s) and
support in the North has been poor, so the turn-out has been low (but
it has happened). If we get support and a good turn-out this year,
it's going to be a pseudo-hat tournament. It's much more Christmasy
and good willish to mix the teams up.

On another note, we should probably organise a game against Swerve, in
Coleraine, sometime over Christmas. (They must get very lonely up
there on their own).

Cheers,
ob

Yes, I was just thinking about the beginners only scoring when I was lying in bed today (it's true).

To be honest, the likelihood of getting 16 beginners teams is, well... unlikely. So why not consider running an 8 team beginners' tournament on one pitch and an 8 team experienced tournament on the other simultaneously? Then everyone is happy?

Also, with more teams it could mean cheaper entry fees or is £55 a set thing for profit reasons?

We've already pretty much filled up all the beginner spaces already and there's no need to have to play x7 20 min games each is there? There's no need for a designated lunch break either. All pitch time should be used as much as possible!

If you want I can steal the Glasgow One Day schedule and let you have a look.

A Not-Boxing Day hat tournament sounds perfect.

Phil.

so lisburn leisureplex isn't free on the 20th. the only other option
for the 20th is to use Jordanstown's new indoor 3G pitch. It's only
free from 10-4 and it's probably twice as expensive (the receptionist
didn't know how much but from previous enquiries it isn't cheap). or
we book just one pitch at a Belfast leisure centre.

OMFG-Unit! This is the gayest thing ever. Want me to check Comber

Some options:

(Keeping Saturday 20th December)

Comber Leisure Centre
Free 2pm-4pm, £40.80 per hour, plus £1 per non-member
Size: 1 resonably big pitch, or split into 2 quite small pitches
seperated by a curtain.
Not a great option. Cost very high, and hall is quite small.

Ards Leisure Centre
Free 1pm-6pm, £32.80 per hour (includes a spectator section)
Size: I haven't seen this sports hall, but apparently it's 4 badminton
courts, or a 5 a side football pitch.
Pretty good option, although means a late start.

PEC
Need to phone these guys back on Monday to inquire about a one-off
booking. Apparently only one woman on their staff has the ability to
handle such a task.
The PEC has shedloads of halls. Surely one of them has our name on it?

Any other ideas?

I should be able to make both dates Pete.

You should definately ask for some sort of discount, tell them there
is already an event organised and you are very upset. If they don't
give you money off then threaten to bomb them.

maybe we should just call in a bomb scare on that day anyways, just to
piss them off.

ok the options.....

20th Dec:
Grove - one hall, indoors,10-4
Jordanstown - two pitches, 3G indoors, 10-4 (deadly expensive)
Ballymena - one hall, indoors, 12-4.30 (bless them didn't know what a
frisbee was!)
Avoneil - one hall, indoors, 11.30-3.30
Ards - one hall, indoors, 1-5
Whiterock - one hall, indoors, 10-2
PEC - possibly but they don't tell you anything. Only threat of death
(or a bomb scare?) are they allowed to tell you anything. Anything at
all.
Stranmillis Embankment - three pitches, outdoors, all day, free.
(Could rerun an indoor tournament at Easter?)
don't know any churches that are big enough.

27th Dec:
Valley - 2 halls, indoors, 9-6, (in hopefully the best lit hall in all
the land!!!!)

3rd Jan:
Valley - indoors, 2 halls until 12.45 then only one hall until 3

thems the options as i've researched. if we are reduced to 4 hours on
pitch, we might be able to squeeze in 6 teams. 6 hours we could get 8
teams (four teams will only get 3 matches though). halls need to be
booked pronto, you have till the end of monday either to come up with
an alternative or to make a decision.

they wouldn't tell me. universities don't seem to be too keen to tell
people anything at all. i have to phone tomorrow. off the top of my
head i think it's something like £60 per hour for one pitch (so £720
for the day) but i'll double check.

Okay. My vote goes for 6 hours at the Grove on 20th. I have no idea what the Grove is like but as long as it's a decent size then it should be fine.

Grove has a spectating area doesn't it? I'm up for Grove, I have no
problems changing dates tho as I'm fairly flexible, but im sure other
people already have it marked in their diaries for the 20th.

i did think the pitch at the grove is quite small.. but for actually

The Belfast Christmas Special is now on the 20th Dec at the Grove
Wellbeing Centre from 10 - 4. The cost per team is £20 per team.
There can only be 8 entries. The teams list is as follows......

1. Super Magic Sparkle Angelfish Go! (Phil 1)
2. Hyper Magic Sparkle Angelfish Go! (Phil 2)
3. Team Jason
4. Deep Pete
5. CHASE 1
6. CHASE 2
7. We're here, we're queer, get over it!
8. LDW

Especially as we're now very restricted with the number of teams, I
think we should really try to get a 4:1 beginner to inexperienced
ratio. If you're short on inexperineced players, let it be known and
I'm sure we'll be able to find a beginner or two.

Everybody fine? If you now can't get your teams together let me know
as soon as you can.

Also discs are to be sold at half price (£4) thanks to a grant from
the IFDA. There are only 20 discs and the offer is strictly for
beginners only, one disc per player.

Cheers for getting it sorted pete. Do we have one pitch or two for this
and what kind of format should we have?

how about. Pick 2 groups of 4 out of a hat and everyone plays 3 group
games. Seed teams and play 3 round knock out. Every team plays 6 games
on 1 pitch, that's 24 individual games, each game is 15 min, total time
6hrs.

Are there any math-magicians out there who can figure out how everyone
plays everyone else?

so the parameters are....

one pitch
6 hours playing time
matches no less than 15mins

stephen, overall that's the schedule i had in mind.

the main problem for me is it's probably cutting it a bit fine to have
24 games of 15mins - it'll take a few minutes to get the teams off and
new teams on. I think a changover of 2 mins is realistic which would
put us over time or make matches shorter than 15mins. either way you
can't start a match at the exact same time as another stops.

so if we stick with this schedule, we'll need to drop some matches.
if we drop matches, we can either drop them in the group stage (every
team gets to play the same number of games) or the knockout stage (no
final placing matches for weaker teams and therefore less matches for
weaker teams). for me it's fairer to drop a round of group matches as
it should affect all the teams equally. so two pools of 4 teams but
each team plays only twice.

So that would mean 20 matches again at 15mins with a 2 min
changeover. that gives us a whole 20 mins extra to set up and for
unforeseen events.

that's my suggestion. anyone else want to have a go?

I reckon we should play as much as possible. It wouldn't be hard to get
the next 2 teams ready before a match is finished and any extras and
award ceremonies can be done afterwards outside. As long as the TD is a
total timing nazi I think we should do 15min games.

Has anyone thought about team colours? I call first dibs on orange.

Also, if we're going to be waiting about half an hour at a time in

Thanks Pete, the beginners' tournament worked much better than
anticipated despite undermanned teams and drop-outs. Thanks to that
fellow from the IFDA as well for keeping the schedule afloat. Keep him
about for future BU competitions! The 'only beginners can score' rule
seemed to work pretty fairly, so might be worth remembering. Good to
see a decent amount of newcomers to the fine game of Ultimate.
Hopefully they liked it enough to keep coming back. We all had a great
time. Congratulations to Super Magic Sparkle Angelfish Go! (ridiculous
name) for piping us in the final. Well played.

Pete, I look forward to your end of year digest for BU.
