Hi guys,

Last month I asked if anyone was interested in doing a talk at Belfast Ruby in the future. There was a few responses and I'm keen to find out who is in available and when. (Simon McCartney, Steven Holdsworth - are you guys still up for speaking? We'd love to have you involved).

As you know, the meetups are held on the first Tuesday of each month, so the next one is on 1st April.

I think we should aim for a similar structure to the last meetup - 2 talks, one geared towards Ruby development (aimed towards more experienced devs) and one more loosely connected and geared towards a wider audience.

So some talk ideas if people are stuck.. Though I know a few of a you already some great ideas.
  • Using Ruby as the backend API for an iOS app
  • Using RubyMotion to create an iOS app
  • Couchbase/CouchDB
  • Redis (Data Structure Server)
  • Agile deployment
  • Rails & JS

Does anyone have any ideas regarding the wider-topic talk content?
Here's some initial ideas I have:
  • Building a website with Middleman (not too far off Coby's talk as this is another static-site generator I use occasionally)
  • Sass - How to use Sass in your project, using plugins like Compass, Bourbon etc, best way to structure your stylesheets etc (I think one of the Rumblers was up for doing this talk)
  • Using HAML and other time-saving tips and tricks with a Ruby/Middleman project

So, who would like to speak at the April meetup?

Thanks, Melissa

How fixed is that 1st April date?  That'll clash with a just about to be announced mini bash devops night being hosted by Instil I'll be speaking at (and it would be great if we didn't clash for all sorts of reasons)

Thanks for letting us know Simon, we're happy to push the meetup back a week.

Next Belfast Ruby meetup is now Tuesday 8th April.

Data structure in models have been a strength of mine. I'm not sure if there'd be any interest in that.

Hi Matt,

Just noticed your reply there. Yeah I think that would be an interesting talk, would you be up for preparing a talk? :)

Thanks,
Melissa

Sweet! If you're happy enough to do the talk at our next meetup (April 8th) do you mind getting in touch with me? I'd like to get a brief synopsis of what you plan to talk about so I can add a few details to the website and event on Digital Circle.

My email is mke...@rumblelabs.com - looking forward to hearing from you :)

Thanks,
Melissa

Melissa,

Yeah I'm still up for speaking, when is more the issue. I'm not that reliable at present due to splitting my time between here and London (generally away 1 or 2 weeks of every month).

I was about 60% complete with my Reactive Programming in Ruby talk, then I stopped working directly in that area with Ruby, *mainly due to the lack of maturity of the Rx.rb implementation, but I have more than enough to mold it into a interesting talk even if its does become a more general Rx programming introduction (with examples in Ruby as much as possible) easily fill a 20-30 min slot..

*That said there has been some big changes since I was looking into this:

Rx.rb
- which has seen some interesting work done to Subjects which was kind of key to it being anyway useful (see: github).

RxJava - JRuby Adapter on 0.16.x branch
- Some nice improvements to action & function wrappers which make all the difference to perf. (see: github

So I will need to get stuck into those and see what I can do. I'll keep you posted and we can sort something out soon.

Was hoping to make it this month but I'm going to miss the meet-up due to the reschedule as I'm heading to http://reactconf.com/.

- Steven H.

No worries Steven, we've decided to do a hack night next week instead of talks.

Your ideas sounds great, just let me know when you think you're all set with it :)

Cheers,
Melissa
