Hi folks,

I was advised to post here a while back by Andrew Bolster. I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on: https://boundaries.scottmoore.xyz

This website contains an interactive map of current and historical Northern Ireland boundaries - including electoral boundaries, administrative boundaries, cadastral boundaries (like baronies, parishes, townlands etc), physical geographical boundaries, statistical boundaries, and more.

Many of the maps are derived and collected from public sector and other sources - but also included are maps I’ve made myself, including accurate digitised maps of the 1984 and 1972 Northern Ireland councils, wards and District Electoral Areas.

Please take a look, see what you think, and feel free to reach out to me if you have any queries or if you’re interested in volunteering to help me build this further, or supporting me and the project via Ko-fi (no obligation, of course!)

All the best,
Scott Moore

Hiya Scott!

I love maps, and I think your project is very interesting. Is there a way to see a specific set of boundaries? Say, I want to see electoral boundaries, or I want to see historical boundaries.

Kind regards,
Silvia

Scott,
I am an active contributor to OpenStreetMap ( https://hdyc.neis-one.org/?jonnymccullagh
You mentioned maps in Irish and Ulster Scots. I created this one (using vector tiles):
https://learscail.openstreetmap.ie
I contacted the Ulster Scots Agency but got no reply.
I'm interested in what you are doing and would like to mention it more widely. Would you be free for a coffee in Belfast some Monday ?
If so please reach out to me on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonnymccullagh/
Regards,
jonny

Hi Scott,

Apologies for the delay in getting back - as somebody who has interest in NI boundaries through the years, especially how public sector data has implicitly evolved as they changed, I have an inkling of the amount of digging and building this would have required -- fantastic work!

I don't want to put you on the spot on a public list, but if you would be up for talking on this at a BLUG pretty please, I for one, would be massively interested :D

All the best,
Phil

Hi folks,

I am not used to using Google Groups, so sincere apologies I didn't see your kind responses at the time.

Silvia - I have just put an update on the website and added further sets of boundaries. There are now two menus - the Catalogue, with a full list of available layers which you can load and unload, and the Active Layers tab, showing currently-loaded layers and allowing you to toggle on/off the display of each one. The idea is that you should be able to view multiple layers simultaneously, and compare and contrast different kinds of boundaries, and compare changes in boundaries over the years.

Jonny - I would be most interested in talking further re: adding different languages onto the website. I am working on my MSc project and I'm focused on adding a feature to view, simulate and visualise NI election results over the years, but I'd definitely welcome your input on adding Irish and Ulster Scots to the website, and I'd certainly be up for meeting in the next week or two - I will reach out to you on LinkedIn!

Phil - you are right about the digging it required!! In particular the 1972 and 1984 wards involved me producing the digitised boundaries myself, by combining townlands from OSNI's townland data, and drawing boundaries manually in QGIS where necessary. I recently added maps provided to me by a volunteer, Paddy Matthews, who did a big piece of work in sourcing electoral division maps for all of Ireland, and also putting together old Stormont Parliament constituency maps from 1929 himself. Don't worry at all about putting me on the spot - I've been wanting an opportunity to properly talk about this to interested folk. There's still a good bit of work ahead in filling in the remaining gaps in the local govt maps between 1926-1973, adding County Electoral Divisions, and compiling Crown copyright sources on the website (see the Books section), as well as my election viewer I'm working on, and I'm more than happy if others are interested in the work of myself and Paddy, and if it can be of use to others.
