Double Your Impact In Our Summer Appeal And Support Bike/Ped Safety Education!
One of our generous donors has offered to match, dollar-for-dollar, all contributions to our 2017 Summer Appeal, up to $5,000. That means your contribution will make twice the difference!

This year's Summer Appeal funds will go directly to expanding the reach and scope of our Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education (BPSE) program. We want to modernize, improve, and increase our capacity to deliver our curriculum to every corner of the state, and make it feasible for educators, no matter where they teach, to be able to use our resources, so that their students are well informed and safe on our roads. We need your help to make this a reality.

So far, we've raised $3,000 toward that $5,000 goal. We still need to raise $2,000 to receive our match. Please make a gift today and double your impact to help us reach every child in the state with basic road safety education!

Pedestrian Safety Forums On Tap In Bangor, Topsham, and Orono
Attendees at a Pedestrian Safety Forum in Bangor last night point out locations where conditions could be improved.
In response to an alarming increase in pedestrian injuries and fatalities, the MaineDOT has partnered with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine to produce a series of 21 Pedestrian Safety Forums throughout the state.

The goal of the forums is to enlist the people who live and work in communities affected by pedestrian crashes to help MaineDOT identify where changes can be made to improve conditions.

Six forums have been held so far, in Westbrook, Bath, Lewiston, Auburn, Saco, and Bangor, and the response in each community has been strong. Nearly 40 people attended a forum held last night in Bangor - the first of two in that city - including representatives from the Bangor Police Dept., several city officials, and state Sen. Geoffrey Gatwick.

The next forums are scheduled for :
  • Bangor: Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Cohen School, 304 Garland St., from 6-8pm.
  • Topsham: Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Mt. Ararat High School, 73 Eagles' Way
  • Orono: Wednesday, Nov. 1, Orono Council Chambers, 59 Main St.

Saying Goodbye To Our Interns

All summer, we've been lucky enough to have the services of two interns from Bates College: Nell Pearson and Gordon Platt. The two came to the Coalition through Purposeful Work Internships, a program run by the Bates Career Development Center that helps students explore their interests, deepen skills, and build professional networks.

Nell, a sophomore at Bates, is from Brooklyn, New York. In the past, she's worked with the Brooklyn Historical Society, Earth Matter NY and Edible Schoolyard NYC. She's also a jazz saxophonist, and enjoys beekeeping, gardening and skiing. She applied for an internship with the Coalition because she's interested in urban planning and sustainability, particularly green infrastructure.

Gordon, from Groton, Mass., will be a junior when school starts this year. He's an avid mountain biker - he's the Mountain Bike Director for the Bates Outing Club - and he applied for the internship with the Coalition to get some professional experience while working to make bicycling better in Maine.

We'll miss their cheerful demeanors and can-do attitudes and we wish them all the best this year at school.
