Hey Guys and Gals,

The below is the proposed Hack-Aid press release.

I’d like to get it reviewed, formalised and circulated by Monday AM.

Does anyone see any issues with it?

Date and time TBC, but will probably synchronise with ongoing events in the Students’ Union at Queen’s (as the Hackathon) to save on security costs and hopefully generate a bit of cross interest.

It is also due for “literary crafting” once comments are in...

Thanks folks,

Ben

What

Hack-Aid is an event run for charity by Hackspace Belfast, QUEST (Queen's University Engineering Science and Technology), and QUB RAG (Raise and Give).

It will provide usable computers (laptop or desktop) for donation to charities, by repairing and refurbishing broken or decommissioned computers donated during the run up to the event.

It will also directly raise money for charity by donations for "drop in" computer repairs, computer health checks and tuition for computers belonging to members of the public.

When

Hack-Aid will run from 12pm on Saturday the ** of December, to 12pm on Sunday the ** of December.

"Drop in" computer repairs can be left in from 12pm to 8pm on Saturday the ** of December. Final collections must be made from 9am to 12pm on Sunday the ** of December. No responsibility will be accepted for computers not collected by this time.

Donations of computers will be accepted from November the ** to December the **.

Where

The main event will take place in the Queen's University Belfast Student's Union Snack Bar. <Venue Subject to Confirmation>

Computer donations will be accepted at the Students' Union reception desk during normal business hours. <link to opening times><Subject to confirmation with QUB RAG / SU>

Charities

Repaired computers will be donated to QUB RAG charities, or sold to students and the proceeds donated to RAG charities.

Computer Donation Information

If you are intending to donate more than a single computer, you should confirm the donation with the organisers by email in advance of dropping it off. Large donations may be refused for logistics reasons if not arranged in advance. <email address>

Donated computers or laptops should have been current within the past 5-6 years - A general indication is that they should be capable of running Windows XP or better.

Unfortunately donations of older computers or laptops may be refused because they are beyond suitable use by charities.

Donated colour flat screens of any size are welcome. Black and white flat screens cannot be accepted.

Unfortunately most donated CRT (old style television monitors) cannot be accepted. Specialist, ultra high definition monitors (such as those used for CAD applications) may be accepted.

All computer peripherals are welcome (keyboards, mice, speakers, headsets, games controllers, scanners, printers).

The event organisers reserve the right to refuse donation of any computer equipment which is unsafe, not repairable or beyond refurbished use.

All computers and laptops will have any existing files or personal information securely deleted.

Any computers or parts which are found to be beyond repair may be returned to the donator.

All donations require the donator to agree to terms and conditions.

Computer Repair Instructions

"Drop in" computer repairs can be left at the event from 12pm to 8pm on Saturday the ** of December. Final collections must be made between 9am and 11pm on Sunday the ** of December. No responsibility will be accepted for computers not collected by this time.

Minimum cash donations for computer repairs will be graded depending on the nature of the repair needed - Minimum donation amounts will always be considerably less than commercial rates.

None of the event organisers, event volunteers or QUB staff accept responsibility for data (files, music, documents, movies, pictures) loss resulting from computer repair - Every effort will be taken to preserve data integrity, but frequently data is unrecoverable on a damaged computer.
