Chicago Public Schools - REMOTE for first quarter

Recently CPS announced that teaching and learning will be REMOTE for at least the first quarter of this new school year (until November). They will reevaluate the pandemic and determine if and when we can report to school.

The Belding teachers and leaders have been busy planning for remote learning BUT we are holding off on releasing SPECIFIC details as we wait for CPS and the CTU to give us some more guidance on specific topics.

Parents - brace yourselves. I will be sending home a LOT of information this month. Look for specific lessons that YOU need to learn before school begins in September.

Here are some of the things I know for sure:

  • Expectations will be MUCH higher. Expect 3 -5 hours per day of learning to be required. We were hit with the pandemic unexpectedly and none of us had time to prepare. Last spring was messy as we learned, solved technical problems, and dealt with a major health crisis.

  • Students will have SEVERAL HOURS each day of live lessons with Belding teachers.

  • Students will also have some independent work time each day (some on computers, some in workbooks and paper packets sent home).

  • We will be giving out Chromebooks to new families who need them. We'll do a campaign to check on technology and WIFI the last 2 weeks of August.

  • Teaching and Learning will begin on Day 1 (September 8).

  • EVERY family PreK - 8 needs to learn Google Classroom. We'll offer parent workshops in English and Spanish to help. If you want to be an early learner, go to Youtube and search for "Google Classroom for Parents" videos. You will receive your new teachers and class codes in late August (week before school starts). Most of you will learn new ways to get alerts for the assignments your child has been given and whether the assignment was completed or not.

  • EVERY family PreK - 8 will need to get on the REMIND app to receive school-wide news and teachers specific information. We'll send instructions on this late August.

  • During the COVID pandemic, Belding students will receive grade level, rigorous instruction to prepare them for the future and to develop in them the critical thinking, literacy, mathematical, communication and study skills for success in education and in life.

  • Readiness for Learning. Before your child begins virtual learning each day, make sure the following is complete:

Students must have teeth and hair brushed

Students in day clothes (not pajamas)

Students in a quiet, well-lit area, sitting up (not on lying on beds or under covers)

and ready to learn (space with a table or desk)

Students must be live on camera (no avatars); we want everyone to see each other

Have water nearby (optional).

No eating during video lessons.

Assume the Best and Support All Stakeholders: In this pandemic, everyone has done the best they know how to do in an unprecedented situation. We will assume the best of our students, families, and staff in our decision- making and we have a strong plan to provide training and support for your teachers, parents and students to improve going forward.
