I am forwarding a mail. I will ask Krpa to contact
you if you are willing to assess the requirements there.
Best wishes.

Nirmal Seva Ashram is a small
voluntary organisation of which I happen to be the President. It is working in
about 60 villages around Hoskote, Bangalore Rural District. Its main work is
with disabled persons establishing self-help groups and getting disabled
children admitted to schools etc. In the last few years we have also taken up
some rain water conservation work.
The Government schools around there
have some of the poorest children coming to school with almost nothing- not even
their own clothing. The teachers asked if we could help by giving them some note
books, pens, pencils, slates etc. So, for the past 6-7 years we have been doing
this. Basically, I have been raising the funds through my contacts for this. It
seems every year I have to approach new persons.
I asked some of the posh schools to
collect unused notebooks and/or parts thereof so that we can have them bound
into new books - this is because we never have enough money to meet all the
demand and also because I thought it is a good idea to save paper. It has again
worked once with each school. They are not enthusiastic about it the second
time.
What we give is something like this: Slates to
Anganwadi children; slates and alphabet books to Class 1. One or two 200P and
100P note books, a pencil and an eraser to class 2; a pen
added to classes 3, 4 and 5; an added 'instruments box' to
Class 6. This is kind of bare minimum. We have also asked children to share
erasers in a class and the sharpner is kept with the teacher!
This is a much appreciated contribution and the number
of children identified by the teachers is steadily growing every year although
these children are those left out from lists of all other handouts by the
Government. Some 10-20 children are selected from each of the 60-70 schools in
the area in our contact.
This year the number of children is 3562 and we need
around Rs. 1 lakh. I would be very happy if you and/or any of your friends could
contribute towards this.
Thanks and with kind regards,
Krpa
