In Lech Lecha, Avrohom goes to great lengths – and embroils himself in a war – to free Lot from his captors. This week, Lot’s home town and surrounding area faces total annihilation and Avrohom is warned about this. After famously praying for its salvation, and failing to achieve respite, Avrohom “returns to his place”.
Assuming that Avrohom is unaware of G-d’s plan to save Lot with angels, why does Avrohom not make any moves to rescue Lot, as he has done previously? Feel free to dispute my assumption but please offer proof, as I cannot see any pesukim that hint at Avraham’s concern for Lot here, or HaShem revealing to him this part of the plan. As far as Avrohom is concerned (in the Torah), Lot and his whole family are wiped out with Sodom’s obliteration, and Avrohom did nothing to save him.
Thanks to all those who’ve privately offered thoughts. Please share them on the group – it’s much more interesting that way!
A connected thought that’s come out of a discussion with someone – Avraham is often credited with trying to “do something about it” – in contrast to Noach. Whilst Noach could have davened, the issue is often used by kiruv/chinuch-types to suggest that Noach could have influenced – or tried to influence – his surroundings. Why didn’t he, they say? It could be that the war was orchestrated by humans, the destruction of sedom by G-d. Only in the former is human intervention justified.
