When I was younger, I often heard the idea that "if you speak loshon hora about Reuvain, you "get" all Reuvain's aveiros". What does that mean?

Rashi seems to imply a similar idea in this week's parsha, 30:16:
טז. וְאִם הָפֵר יָפֵר אֹתָם אַחֲרֵי שָׁמְעוֹ וְנָשָׂא אֶת עֲו‍ֹנָהּ:
ונשא את עונה: הוא נכנס תחתיה. למדנו מכאן שהגורם תקלה לחבירו הוא נכנס תחתיו לכל עונשין:

Rambam's Hilchos Teshuva, and everything we learn suggests (IMHO) a much more complex & intrinsic relationship between mitzvos/aveiros and the individual. It does not suggest a system that allows one to pick up another person's aveiros with just one action.

Can anyone explain?

I’m not quite sure how you can compare the two – what rashi says is quite logical – to the extent that you cause something you are an intrinsic part of it without any complex/magical transfers – I recall R Asher Weiss says something similar on Yissachar and Zevulun “contracts” (i.e. they don’t mean much), if you facilitated something you are a part of the result by definition, not because of some formal agreement.

However, on the loshon hora point – I’m not if there are any early sources for that, please excuse my scepticism and happy to be disproven.

I understand your question regarding loshon hara - would have to check what the source of that idea is.

When it comes to the rashi you quoted I think it's a bit simpler. The husband, through his faulty hafara, causes the wife to think her neder is annulled. He is thus responsible for her sin in breaking her vow and therefore receives the punishment.

Thank you, all. An individual emailed about Rashi's "לכל עונשין", which I understood to mean "he gets the whole package of onshin" but in fact means "this applies to other areas of halacha as well". You're right; thanks for pointing that out.
The Loshon Hora thing is apparently a chovos halevovos, though I don't know where. Does anyone know an early source or can explain how/why this works?
