How did the Jewish People worship Ba'al Pe'or in the episode that led up to Pinchos killing Zimri & Cozbi?
Rashi (below) explains how Ba'al Pe'or is worshipped, yet the Jews did not excrete whilst in the desert eating Mon (Midrash Rabboh, Bamidbor 16:24)?

One is also chayav for worshipping any avoda zarah in one of the standard ways, such as bowing down to it or offering a sacrifice to it.

Maybe that's what happened here as well.

R Chaim Mivelozhon  explains they excreted from eating food they bought from the pedlars outside the cloud – in this case I assume the Moabite women who set up stalls

PS

If interested it’s in his essay on Kedusha and the opposite in Food and Mishna Avot :  3 people eating without Divrei Torah is like eating idolatrous sacrifices (Zivchei Metim ) and its relationship to Ba’al Peors’ bizarre mode of worship .

Essay printed somewhere between 2 chalakim of Nefesh Hachayim in the standard edition we have at the Beis .(Mind blowing !)

I think R 'Yehonasan Eibeshitz discusses this issue.

In next weeks Parsha we find bnei Gad Ureuven having "mikneh Rav" He interprets this l'shevach in that the reason they had so much cattle was because they had not been involved to such an extent with Baal Peor. i.e They had cattle which they could use as korbanos if they wanted to eat meat and it was from eating these that the were required to excrete, thus facilitating worship of baal peor.
