Indigo is a digital personal assistant application that launched in April in both the Google Play store and the Windows Marketplace. Unlike Google Now, it kick-starts a conversation with every query you ask it, and it enables cross-platform functionality on Android and Windows Phone handsets. It works a lot like Siri in that you can interact with it to find answers to your questions or perform some basic functions like dictating a text message or e-mail.

Indigo is produced by Artificial Solutions, a European company that specializes in natural language. "We have been using this technology for the last ten years to develop online virtual assistants that help large enterprises improve their customer service and at the same time reduce costs," said Andy Peart, chief marketing officer for Artificial Solutions, in a phone call with Ars. "We do this by diverting a number of service calls that would normally [take place with] a live agent and we handle it automatically." Essentially, Indigo is similar to the artificial intelligence engine that attempts to understand your question when you're calling in for customer support.

Indigo is coming to the Android platform at an interesting time, when other third-party virtual assistant applications like Sherpa and Dragon Virtual Assistant are coming up against virtual assistants baked into the operating system. For Jelly Bean users, the native assistant application is Google Now, which has become one of Android's major selling points. You can ask it to send text messages or you can call up Cards to display relevant contextual information throughout the day. Google recently updated the service to include geo-fenced reminders and public transit travel times, and Google Now can pop up Cards with books, movies, music, and television shows that are relevant to your interests. It's hard to imagine that anything could replace Google Now, but these third-party app developers are hoping to do what Google Now can't, and that includes bringing the functionality of Apple's conversational Siri over to Android.

We thought we'd take Indigo out for a spin and ask it the types of questions we'd normally ask Google Now. We compared a broad range of queries, like where to find things and which actors performed in certain movies, to see Indigo's conversational abilities in action. We also briefly used a Windows Phone to test the cross-platform abilities of Indigo.

Your mandatory Indigo account allows you to sync up your settings and starred conversations. Your account gives you access to an online portal where you can input your home and work addresses and manage connected devices. You can also use the service via your browser and ask it questions from there. If necessary, the application will respond to text queries so you don't have to shout at it all the time.

Indigo struggled in some instances. I had asked when the new Star Trek movie was coming to theaters, but Google Now was more aware that I was referring to the sequel while Indigo bought up the release date for the previous Star Trek flick. When I asked it where I could go to watch After Earth, Indigo performed the search via Wolfram Alpha, which rendered no results, though it launched my browser and took me to Hollywood.com. Google Now simply did what it usually does and tapped into its own search engine, bringing up showtimes at theaters near me.

When I wanted to know a little more about Jackson Pollack, Indigo brought up some quick facts like where he was born, how old he was when he passed away, and what he was well-known for. Google Now also provided the same information, but it included a link to Wikipedia for further reading. When I asked both Google Now and Indigo the name of David Sedaris' latest book, Google brought up the Amazon page for Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, including the ISBN number. Indigo got stuck, thinking I had asked about "David Stairs the movie," and when I asked the question again, it merely retrieved Sedaris' entire name. But when I asked both services who wrote the movie Gone Baby Gone, Google Now instantly answered in the form of a Card and gave me an option to get more information about the screenwriter and the author of the original book. Indigo pulled its information from Wolfram Alpha, which also showed who directed the movie, when it was released, and its MPAA rating, but not the original author of the book. While Indigo's answer was certainly edifying, Google Now's answer was more succinct.

Indigo impressed with other queries, however. I asked it for a listing of Thomas Keller's restaurants nearby, and it launched the Maps application and then helpfully retrieved the names of the restaurants and where they were located (though it also brought up a few places that aren't associated with the famed chef). Regardless, Indigo managed to get me the information I needed, and I imagine that if I were on my way to Napa in a rental car, I would have been able to try out one of Keller's famously lauded restaurants. It's just unfortunate that Indigo only works half of the time.

Google Assistant is no longer Google's favorite child. With AI being the current buzzword, the company is instead focusing on Google Bard and its other efforts like Generative Search. This also means the virtual assistant is not receiving as frequent feature additions and updates as before. But Google has not entirely abandoned Assistant and has added two new voices.

Google Assistant's new "Lime" and "Indigo" voices are available for US English, with the former being a male voice and the latter a female. They aim to "bring more diversity" to the voice options offered by the assistant.

All Assistant voices have been named after a color, and Google has continued that trend with its latest additions. The new Indigo and Lime voices are available on your phone, Google Home, and smart displays. You can hear the new voices in Google's official announcement.
