In North Carolina, a doctor is exploring a possible new
treatment for a little girl's cerebral palsy --- using the child's umbilical
stem cells.
Three-year-old Zoey Komninos was born with Cerebral Palsy.
But
her parents have a glimmer of hope.
After Zoey's birth, they paid a private
lab to store blood from her umbilical cord.
Now, researchers at Duke
Children's Hospital are using that cord blood to treat the little girl's
condition.
The doctor says Zoey's cord blood contains her own stem cells.
Those cells are infused into her bloodstream using a standard iv.
researchers believe her stem cells will move to the brain, helping to repair the
damage and, in some cases, even turn into new brain cells.
