Is sustainable urbanisation possible?
China's centrally planned economy has allowed for the largest and fastest urbanization effort in human history. Yet in mapping China’s urbanisation over the last ten years architect and urban planner Neville Mars maintains that even heavy handed mega-scale projects are at the mercy of a more organic form of urban growth.
Mars will look at current approaches to urban planning in China and will also discuss the role of the much-hyped ecocity and how cities in China and India are adapting their urbanization models given challenges like chronic pollution. Mars will explain how a more holistic approach to planning is required, replacing “instant and static cities in China with evolving and maturing solutions”.
