Bookshelves for enchanting

Does anyone know how many bookshelves I need to get the full benefit from my enchanting table? It used to be 30, but then I heard it was 15. I know I can always get an enchantment that costs 30 levels, but I have a hard time getting to offer me enchantments for 20-29. I want more of a range in what it offers me.

That's what I thought but why does it never offer me anything like 25, no matter how many times I click? It's always 17-19 or 30. Sometimes I just want to do 26, ya' know.

i have the same problem with 20-29 with a full set up.

On the page Spencer linked I found a promising looking solution.

 

A simple method is to surround the enchantment table with a 1-block high square of bookshelves with an empty space anywhere on the perimeter:

 

According to the table on that page you just need to disable between one and seven tables (simply done by putting a torch on them) to get offers from the 20s. I'm going to try this tonight. Once I determine if it works with torches, I might try some fancy sticky piston arrangement to disable some of them at the touch of button.

i have my bookshelves rigged with pistons but only two teirs.

each teir adds 9 books

no either 20 or 30, never much in between.

i only enchant 1-5 or 30 so i usually divide all my points into 4 piece armor sword and tools or max out enchantment on 1 thing with 30 points.

If you happen to want to see scores in the mid 20s you can set a torch on the floor between the enchanting table and the books.  A torch in the corner blocks 3 bookcases, one on a side blocks one.  Pretty easy to control the max number in the mid-20s that way.
