Behold the 2011 Local Farm Tours!

This growing season 12 local farmers will open their gardens, fields, pastures, barns, and forests to the public in support of our growing local food community.  There will be two farms hosting a tour each month from May through October.  The farms are all small-scale, diversified operations that sell high quality food directly to their customers.  They include fruit and vegetable farms, pasture-raised beef, goats, sheep, hogs, and poultry, value-added products processed on the farms, community supported agriculture, season extension hoophouses and greenhouses, and more.

The tours will help expand the local food and farming community by engaging more people to get out to see local farms, meet our local farmers to hear their stories directly, and connect local farmers.  Come take a walk on the farm and see how the food is grown.  The tours are open to all.  Beginning farmers and other experienced local farmers are highly encouraged to attend the tours to make connections with other farmers and share ideas.

Many of the tours are "field walks" to get a view of the many unique characteristics of each farmer and farm.  Some also have a theme, such as "harvesting and curing specialty garlic" or "transitioning to Permaculture".  Find more information about each tour and directions to the farms at the Farmshed website, www.farmshed.org.

Farmshed is looking for volunteers to help advertise the tours by posting and spreading the attached flyer, contacting local media and making press releases, and to help with organizing on the day of the tour.  Please contact John Sheffy, jo...@farmshed.org, if you would like to volunteer or if your organization or group would like to partner with or support the farm tours.

Please forward this message far and wide.

Thanks,

John
