For applications that require more protection from weather, chemicals or the potential of falling tree limbs, debris or other disturbances, Prysmian provides covered overhead conductor. Prysmian also offers some of the common conductor or cable items that are consumed in overhead applications and in the electric utility marketplace such as aluminum tie wire, bare soft copper grounding conductor, steel overhead ground wire and steel guy wire. For our full breadth of overhead product, see Inside Overhead Conductors below.
Weather-proof line wire is used for overhead transmission and distribution lines. The covering provides mechanical protection to the conductor and is resistant to weathering and chemicals. If the conductors accidentally come into contact due to high winds, falling tree limbs or other disturbances, the covering resists short circuits and the tendency for conductors to weld together.
Tree wire is used in areas with overhead power lines that have a potential for contact with trees or other debris. The durable covering helps to protect against electrical faults due to contact. Tree wire consists of a single conductor (AAC, AAAC, or ACSR) covered with either a single layer of thermoset track resistant covering, a two-layer thermoset covering with a track resistant outer layer, or a three-layer thermoset covering with a track-resistant outer layer and a thermoset semi-conductive conductor shield. These designs may be used as spacer cable with the appropriate accessories.
PowrServ OH 600-volt-rated overhead service drop cables in duplex, triplex and quadruplex neutral-supported constructions may be used for overhead service entrance applications. Duplex is intended to deliver single-phase power. Triplex is intended to deliver 3-wire single-phase power. Quadruplex is intended to deliver 4-wire three-phase power. They meet all applicable requirements of ANSI/ICEA Standard S-76-474.
Aluminum tie wire is a soft solid aluminum wire that is used in overhead transmission and distribution line construction to mechanically secure components such as conductors to pin insulators. The wire is also used for above-ground grounding applications in line construction.
Steel overhead ground wire is used in overhead ground wire or static wire applications, while steel guy wire is used in shield wire, messengers and span wire applications. The steel wires are protected from corrosion by galvanizing.
The bare aluminum and ACSR conductors described here are suitable for installation in all practical spans on transmission towers, wood poles and other structures, ranging from long distance EHV transmission lines to sub-service spans at distribution or utilization voltages on private premises.
The choice of conductor size, type and strength should take into account factors such as electrical load, voltage regulation, corona losses, ice and wind loading, extreme temperatures and vibration. Nexans is prepared to assist in the evaluation of these factors as they apply to specific installations.
ACSR
ACSR is a composite concentric-lay-stranded conductor consisting of a central steel core around which are stranded one or more layers of aluminum alloy 1350-H19 wires. The steel core may consist of a single wire, 7, 19, 37 or more concentrically stranded wires. The steel wires are normally protected against corrosion by a zinc coating. The standard Class A coating is usually adequate for ordinary environments. Heavier Class B or Class C coatings may be specified for greater protection. A special high-strength steel core with a Class A coating is also available.
Features and Benefits:
ACSR conductors have a long service record due to their economy, dependability and favourable strength to weight ratio. Such conductors combine the light weight and high conductivity of the aluminum wires with the tensile strength and ruggedness of the steel core. For overhead line design, this enables higher tensions to be used with less conductor sag and longer spans than would be possible with most other types of conductors.
ASC
Bare overhead aluminum stranded conductors (ASC) are concentric-lay-stranded consisting of one or more layers of aluminum alloy 1350 wires wrapped helically around a central wire. Each successive layer has six wires more than the underlying one. Increasing the number of wires for any given cross-sectional area provides greater flexibility. The most commonly used strandings consist of 7, 19, 37, 61 and 91 wires.
Class AA strandings are used for bare overhead lines. The direction of lay for the outer layer is right-hand and is usually reversed in successive layers. The temper of the wires is full hard-drawn (H19).
Features and Benefits:
ASC conductors are the most economical since their lighter weight means lower unit length costs, easier handling during installation and the use of simpler fittings. They are inherently corrosion resistant due to their homogeneous construction
Applications
ACSR
Aluminum conductors, steel reinforced (ACSR) are widely used for overhead transmission and distribution lines.
ASC
Stranded bare ASC conductors may be used in overhead line installations where the design parameters do not require the higher tensile strength or temperature ratings provided by ACSR, ACCR or other types of conductors
Aluminium conductors have achieved wide acceptance all over the world for use in overhead transmission and distribution lines. Generally a steel core is used with the aluminium to give the conductor mechanical strength. This arrangement is termed Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced or ACSR. Conductors comprised entirely of aluminium are known as All Aluminium Conductors or AAC.These conductors are extensively used for busbars in outdoor substations where spans are short. All Aluminium Alloy Conductors or AAAC consist of an alloying of aluminium to give a tensile strength in excess of that of AAC, allowing longer spans. These conductors are recommended for coastal areas where severe corrosion is a problem.
In 2016, Aberdare Cables was acquired by a Chinese cable manufacturer, Hengtong. The Hengtong group operates in 120 countries, has 9 overseas manufacturing bases and owns 5 brands, including Aberdare.
Houston Wire & Cable is a distributor of overhead line and transmission cables. If you have short spans or do not require a high breaking strength, all aluminum conductor (AAC) can be an affordable option. AAC is also desirable in coastal areas due to its homogeneous (all aluminum) construction, which is naturally corrosion resistant.
Tratos works with an International manufacturer of accessories used for installation and terminating these conductors, including Dead end clamps, Midspan joints, Spacers, Insulators and Stockbridge vibration dampers, ready to supply these if required
Tratos also manufactures a comprehensive range of traditional bare round wire concentric lay ACSR and AAAC overhead stranded conductors with or without grease filling to National and International standards. EHV and HV types are produced for Transmission System Operating Companies, and HV, MV, and LV types are produced for Distribution Network Operating Companies.

AAAC-Aluminum Alloy Overhead Bare Conductor is mainly used as bare overhead transmission cable and as primary and secondary distribution cable. It is also suitable for laying across basins, rivers and valleys where special geographical teatures exist.
3. Higher Ampacity: AAAC can carry atleast 15-20% extra current as compared to ACSR of equal sizeLonger Life: Experience in foreign countries shows that All Aluminium Alloy Conductors are in service for over 60 years, which is about double the life of ACSR Conductors.
AAAC-This section deals with heat-treatable magnesium silicon type aluminium alloys to the applicable International Standard, the electrical and mechanical properties of which all fall within the values suggested by relevant standard.Conductors to all other recognized specifications can also be supplied. The alloys referred to have higher strength but lower conductivity than pure aluminium.
Being lighter, alloy conductors can sometimes be used to advantage in place of the more conventional ACSR; Having lower breaking loads than the later, their use becomes particularly favourable when ice and wind loadings are low.
Overhead lines, sometimes referred to as Aerial conductors, are often specified where there is significant distances to cover and where these cables are best positioned far out of reach. The distances to cover, the environmental conditions it will face, and the location are all factors in specifying the appropriate cable.
The main classifications of bare conductor are AAC (All Aluminium Conductor), AAAC (All Aluminium Alloy Conductor) or ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced). AAC is most commonly found in urban areas with frequent supports and short spans. It is also used in coastal regions where salt in the air can cause corrosion - the All Aluminium wire providing corrosion resistance - and specified for use in the railway industry for OHL electrification. AAAC tend to be specified where greater mechanical resistance is required and where there is a reduced sag characteristic. The ACSR, with its steel reinforcement provides additional strength and where the spans run for larger distances, such as across rivers.
