Melanie’s Story

Melanie said she first learned about the carnivore diet in approximately 2021, after the birth of her second child during the COVID shutdowns. She and her husband happened to watch an interview in which Mikhaila Peterson discussed eating a carnivore diet and her experiences with autoimmune disease and juvenile arthritis.

At that time, Melanie was experiencing severe carpal tunnel syndrome. Her entire hand was frequently numb, and she was nearly unable to hold her baby. She was attending physical therapy and chiropractic appointments several times a week. A hand surgeon told her she would probably need surgery, and the procedure was scheduled.

Her original reason for trying the carnivore diet was to see whether changing her food might reduce inflammation and improve the carpal tunnel syndrome. Before making the change, she described her diet as a standard American diet containing processed foods, restaurant food, takeout, and almost anything she wanted to eat.

Interstitial Cystitis

The most significant unexpected change, according to Melanie, was the disappearance of her interstitial cystitis symptoms.

She described interstitial cystitis as a chronic and debilitating bladder condition that had affected her for as long as she could remember. As a child, she needed permission to leave class whenever necessary because she could not comfortably hold her bladder for more than approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

The condition interfered with school, road trips, work, sleep, relationships, childcare, and daily activities. She described the pain as similar to having a urinary tract infection continuously. At times, the pain felt as though knives were inside the lower part of her body.

Beginning when she was about two or three years old, doctors frequently assumed she had urinary tract infections. She was repeatedly prescribed antibiotics, sometimes without evidence that a bacterial infection was present. No one initially recognized the repeated pattern of burning, urgency, frequency, and pelvic pain.

During her twenties, doctors considered other possible explanations, including dysmenorrhea and endometriosis. She eventually found information about interstitial cystitis in a magazine and asked her gynecologist whether it could explain her symptoms. Her doctor agreed that it probably did.

Melanie then saw a urologist and underwent testing and treatment. A cystoscopy reportedly showed extensive bladder damage and what she identified as Hunner’s ulcers. She also underwent bladder hydrodistention, during which the bladder is filled while the patient is under anesthesia.

She described her bladder as being unable to expand normally because of extensive irritation and scar tissue. Following the procedures, she experienced substantial pain and was prescribed approximately six medications.

One medication reportedly cost approximately $600 per month and did not provide meaningful relief. She said one of her medications also affected her eyesight. The transcript identifies the medication only incompletely, although she appears to have been referring to a drug associated with later concerns about eye damage.

Despite the procedures and medications, she felt that conventional treatment reduced or numbed symptoms without addressing the underlying cause.

After changing her diet, Melanie said the bladder pain, burning, urgency, and frequency disappeared within weeks. She stopped the medications and did not require additional procedures.

She believes that reducing inflammation allowed the lining of her bladder to recover. However, she acknowledged that she does not know the scientific mechanism and that this is her personal interpretation.

She also reported that eating foods outside her normal carnivore plan can quickly cause bladder symptoms to return. This immediate reaction is one reason she remains strict with her diet.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel symptoms also improved during the approximately three-month period before her scheduled surgery.

By the time the operation was approaching, she said she no longer needed it. She canceled the surgery, physical therapy, and chiropractic care because the hand numbness and related symptoms had resolved.

This was particularly striking to her because she had originally tried the diet specifically for the carpal tunnel problem. She said that the improvements began after she started eating primarily meat, eggs, and butter.

Menstrual and Hormonal Symptoms

Melanie reported that her menstrual cycles became regular after changing her diet.

She said menstrual cramps completely disappeared. Before the dietary change, the pain could be severe enough that she needed to take approximately a week away from work during her period.

She also reported that cystic acne disappeared.

Headaches, Sinus Problems, and Tinnitus

Before adopting the diet, Melanie experienced frequent headaches and took ibuprofen or migraine medication regularly.

She reported that the daily headaches and recurring migraines stopped. She also said that chronic sinus infections and ringing in the ears disappeared.

Mental Health, Fatigue, and Energy

Melanie said symptoms she identified as obsessive-compulsive disorder were drastically reduced and became almost nonexistent.

She also described a major improvement in fatigue. Previously, she took a nap almost every day. After changing her diet, she said she generally sleeps seven to eight hours, does not need naps, and has substantially more energy.

She no longer experiences the same hunger fluctuations, energy crashes, or constant food cravings. She described having spent much of her teenage and adult life trying to lose weight, disliking her appearance, and thinking continually about food.

Eating a simple and repetitive carnivore diet reportedly quieted those thoughts. She said she now spends less time thinking about her next meal and has more time and energy for productive and enjoyable activities.

Eyesight

Melanie reported an unexpected improvement in her vision.

She had previously worn contact lenses and glasses and believed that her vision was worsening. She went for a LASIK consultation because her glasses no longer seemed to work correctly.

According to her account, the examination showed that the glasses were no longer the correct prescription and that her uncorrected eyesight was not poor enough to require LASIK. She was told that she did not currently need glasses.

She stopped wearing glasses and contact lenses and said her ability to see while driving at night also improved.

Weight and Joint Pain

Melanie reported losing approximately 70 pounds.

Weight loss was not her original purpose for trying the diet. Her initial concerns were carpal tunnel syndrome, inflammation, and joint pain.

She had assumed that worsening joint pain was simply part of getting older. After the dietary change, she concluded that chronic pain and physical decline should not automatically be accepted as inevitable consequences of aging.

What She Eats

Melanie described her daily diet as simple and repetitive.

Her first meal generally consists of:

• Grass-fed beef
• Scrambled eggs or egg yolks
• Real butter

Later in the day, often around 4:00 p.m., she may eat:

• Steak
• Shrimp
• Additional beef

She primarily eats beef and does not usually eat lamb or pork. She avoids bacon and cured meats because they appear to aggravate her bladder and make her feel unwell.

She prefers egg yolks and often limits egg whites. She acknowledged that the diet may appear boring but said she continues to enjoy the same foods and does not become tired of them.

She said eating this way provides steady energy and eliminates the cycles of hunger, cravings, and overeating she experienced previously.

Social and Lifestyle Changes

Melanie emphasized that changing her diet required changing much more than food.

She stopped participating in many conventional eating and drinking habits, including:

• Pizza outings
• Cake and ice cream at celebrations
• Eating whatever was served at family dinners
• Regular alcohol consumption
• Eating foods merely because they were part of a social occasion

She described grieving the loss of her previous lifestyle and feeling as though her former identity had to end so that she could build a healthier life.

She continues attending birthday parties, holiday meals, and family gatherings, but often brings her own food. Over time, friends and relatives became accustomed to seeing different food on her plate.

She said it became empowering to attend events without feeling tempted by cake, cookies, alcohol, or other foods. At holidays such as Thanksgiving, she notices that she retains energy after the meal while other people may feel tired or uncomfortable.

Support and Criticism

Her husband was supportive throughout the change. She described him as eating somewhere between carnivore and ketogenic.

She considers support from a spouse, friend, online community, or other source extremely important because such a major lifestyle change can be socially difficult.

She also received criticism and skepticism. Some people warned that the diet would harm her or focused almost exclusively on her cholesterol rather than on the disappearance of her symptoms and her weight loss.

Family members sometimes asked how she achieved the improvements but lost interest when she explained the restrictions, particularly the elimination of alcohol.

She concluded that many people think of a diet as a temporary program designed to reach a particular weight or appearance goal. For her, the carnivore diet became a permanent lifestyle because returning to previous foods can cause symptoms to return.

She no longer tries to pressure others to eat the same way. Instead, she shares her experience, answers questions, and tries to lead by example.

Her Motivation for Speaking Publicly

Melanie believes that interstitial cystitis is often discussed too little because it affects private bodily functions and can make patients feel embarrassed or ashamed.

She wants people with the condition to speak openly with their doctors when medications and procedures are not helping. She also wants dietary approaches to receive more attention in the interstitial cystitis community.

She emphasized that she cannot guarantee that the carnivore diet will work for everyone. Her claims are based on her own experience.

She nevertheless believes that dietary changes may help some people reduce pain and inflammation, and she wants people in chronic pain to know that they may have additional options to investigate.

She said she now feels able to live normally without constantly searching for a bathroom or spending long periods immobilized by pain.

She also feels she has regained time that was previously lost to illness, appointments, fatigue, food preoccupation, and chronic discomfort.

Public Information

Melanie identified her YouTube channel as “Carnivore Queen.”

She also identified her Instagram account as “Carnivore Queen 1.”

At the time of the interview, she was developing a website, newsletter, and introductory guide intended to help people begin their own health journey, particularly people dealing with interstitial cystitis.

Important Context

This account is a personal testimonial. It does not establish that the carnivore diet cures interstitial cystitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, vision problems, migraines, hormonal disorders, or other medical conditions.

Some of the speaker’s descriptions, including the regeneration of her bladder lining and the cause of her eyesight changes, are her personal interpretations rather than medically confirmed conclusions.
