Hi all,
I am trying to set up a media server for my house that will host all of my music, videos, pictures, and master documents... I have Ubuntu 14.04 running, and actually have the same install on both. I have installed beets on both machines, following the instructions on "getting started". I have used the 'apt-get' option and the 'pip' option. On my laptop, I have v 1.3.15, yet on my server, it refuses to install anything but 1.3.1. Seems like not much of a difference, but when trying to run 'beet config-e', I get an error 'error: unknown command config'. I get the same when trying 'beet config -p'. I have attached sudo to the front, with no luck, and have uninstalled and re-installed the program to no avail.

I have tried the instructions to download the latest version(On the FAQ page), and that doesn''t seem to work. One odd thing is that if I type 'beet version', it returns v1.3.1, but if I use the 'pip show -f beets' command, it tells me v1.3.16, which is the latest beta release as I understand it. I followed the pip instructions for removing beets, so I don't know if I have 2 different installs, or what, but I do kinow that I don't want to sort through all of that music over the wireless and hosted on my laptop, although this install seems to be fine.

I am pretty new to Linux, so maybe I',m missing something basic. And help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ubuntu’s packages are usually out of date (and 14.04 is 18 months old), so it’s not too surprising that `apt-get` got you an old version.

You likely need to to remove the beets you got through apt first (I believe it’s `apt-get remove beets`) and *then* install with pip.
